Tax Day Ramblings

My taxes have long been done & the refund long been spent, so for those of you still scrambling, very unfortunate, great day to be fishing.  Speaking of spending money, I recently bought a new Shimano Curado E7 & 2 new Shimano Stradic 2500 spinning reels.  I bought the Curado, because its new, from Shimano and I just had to have one.  I bought the new Stradics because I needed one new reel and I have heard that the new features on these reels almost eliminate line twist and wind knots and that will pay for itself come tournament time!  Fortunately for all of you, spending all that money has caused me to dig a little deeper and list a ton more stuff on my Bass Fishing eBay Store.  I have listed 4 Shimano reels (Stradic Mg, Calcutta, Castaic & Corsair), plus a ton of tackle (Sebile, Berkley, Jigs, etc.).

The weather has been beautiful the past two weeks, so I have had the boat out once briefly and stopped 3 times from shore to fish for some crappies.  Bad news, no crappies and 1 baby northern pike, on the flip side jumping green bullheads really seem to like my crappie sized micro chatterbaits tipped with 2″ chunks of Gulp.  I think I have caught 19 of those buggers….

Other random things…
Supposed there will be a Calamba Cup on World’s Greatest Fishing Show, featuring Zona & KVD against Swindle & Skeet. Should make for excellent TV Saturday morning, so set your DVRs.

My daughter Riely turns 1 on Friday, very exciting, big birthday party weekend, been busy getting house ready.  Even better new, will be freed up for fishing after this weekend :0   Watch out Pool 2 bass!

Next week expect Fantasy Fishing lineups for both Norman & Smith Lakes.  Plus, Tru-Tungsten has sent me a bunch their new hand pour worms for prizes, so sharpen your lineups, the prizes are great!

Lastly, this Saturday, I have a FREE Bass FIshing seminar at the Medina Entertainment center at 10:15am.  Come and learn how you can be better at extracting bass from shallow heavy cover, you will not want to miss that!  Details Here!

Give it a listen, there will be no transcript this time.  I am sure most of you did not get up on Saturday, but the good news is I edited this down from over 30 minutes to around 17 minutes.

Lake Wheeler Fantasy Fishing Group Winner!

Congratulations to Brad Veech from MN, he was the highest scoring member of my Bassin’ Blog group for ESPN Fantasy Fishing at Lake Wheeler event.  Not sure if most of the members of both my BASS & FLW group, but I am mailing a most of my prizes to MN & WI, maybe we just have too much time on our hands with the frozen water and closed bass seasons….

Brad had a nice event and slid up the group standings aways, lets see if he can keep it going and catch our leader J Mayer.

Brief email interview with Brad and this is what he had to say on his strategy:
“The team I put together for Wheeler was predicated on the lack of points scored at the previous event. Looking at the empirical data available for the anglers strengths on this type of lake at this time of year & geographic proximity to Wheeler I made the necessary changes to my lineup. All the while focusing on the upcoming events to try and get a quality angler at a lower price that will perform well at the next couple of events. So in review, I made a last minute guess because my team sucked at Dardanelle.”

His winning team was:

Todd Faircloth
Matt Herren
Steve Kennedy
Aaron Martens
Skeet Reese

For Brad’s efforts, he has won a SWL Recoil Rig Field Kit, decal & promo code, he can use the promo code to buy his kid some tackle, since he is probably pointed Brad in the right direction this week!!

Howellsketch_RRpkg200.jpg
I am sure Brad & Matt will catch plenty of bass as well when they employ the Recoil Rig to the already deadly Drop Shot technique!  Thanks to Secret Weapon Lures  for helping out with the prizes.

Its not too late to join my group, prizes will be awarded at every tournament and year end.

Best regards,

Dardanelle Fantasy Fishing Group Winner!

Congratulations to Brandon Olson from Burnsville, MN, he was the highest scoring member of my Bassin’ Blog group for ESPN Fantasy Fishing at Lake Dardanelle.  Which means Jason ends his streak at 2 wins!

Brief email interview with Brandon and this is what he had to say on his strategy:
“I basically stuck with the lineup I’ve used all season with the exception of swapping out Kevin Wirth for Kevin Short.  It also never hurts to have KVD!”

For Brandon’s efforts, he has won a SWL Buzzbait, a decal & 30% off promo code.

I am sure Jason will catch plenty of bass as well when he employs the his new buzzbait this spring!  Thanks to Secret Weapon Lures  for helping out with the prizes.

Its not too late to join my group, prizes will be awarded at every tournament and year end.  Lake Wheeler is under way now, so look for another winner early next week…

Interview with Kim Bain-Moore

I was recently approached to do an interview with WBT pro and recent Bassmaster Classic qualifier Kim Bain-Moore.  I thought this would be a fun interview, so I teamed up with John Haynes from Bass Fishing the Midwest and the rest is history!  I think you will enjoy, just click on the player.

This interview can also be found on iTunes.
Apple iTunes

Below is a sumarized view of the interview for those that do not or cannot listen to the PodCast.  Trust me the text does not do the Audio justice!  I shortend & eliminated a few things from the text, because it was just too much typing.

Bassin Blog: John & I pride ourselves on doing our research about guests, we think we found a nugget that may have been overlooked and not really talked about, we have reason to believe that you fished the most recent Bassmaster Classic on the Red River and are actually the first women to do so, is this correct?

Kim Bain-Moore: (Laugh) Very Clever Fellas.

BB: Tell Us about the Experience

KB: Absolutely, was the pinnacle of my career.  I have dreamed about the goal since being a little girl and something worked very hard to achieve, it was a dream come true and a bit of an overwhelming experience.  Really great to see all the excitement around the Classic, the media, my family coming in from Australia.  Big year for my sponsors as well, including the 100 year anniversary for Evinrude.

BB: Tell us about what Evinrude is doing to celebrate their anniversary

KB: Good questions, lots going on, lots of interviews spreading the word.  Lots of incentives, go to your dealers to learn about incentives on new E-tec motors.  Had a small incident at the last tournament, a run in that was my own fault.  Had a brand new lower unit installed and I was back in the water in no time, missed no fishing time.  It was AWESOME!

BB: Finished 13th at Neely Henry, any added pressure media or otherwise at that event?

KB: I don’t think I went in to the tournament, feeling any added pressure, just really chomping at the bit to get back out fishing on the WBT.  LASt year I had a 4th place finish at Neely Henry and certainly conditions changed a lot, water was lower and earlier in the season, most of the fish has not pushed back in the creeks as much.  I found myself doing a lot of spotted bass fishing where last year I weighed all largemouth.  I was really proud of my 13th place finish, would have like to have a top 10, have 3 more events for the season.  Next event is at Lake Quachita in Lousiana, should be a better flipping bite.

BB: Of the next events, which are you looking forward to the most?

KB: All of the remaining events, Quachita, Old Hickory & Arkansas River.  I am excited for the challenge; I am used to fishing more lakes.  The river system is new to me, which is what I enjoyed about the Classic on the Red River in Shreveport.  Its important to learn something every time out on he water and this year will definitely be about learning. If I had to pick one, probably say Old Hickory where I have the most experience there, but I am keen about fishing the Quachita as well and do some flipping and bush hawging and get back in the back country and catch a few big ones.

BB: Last year never finished worst then 6th last year, can you repeat as WBT AOY?

KB: Yeah, I think so.  WBT has same system last year where you get to delete your worst finish.  There maybe a little added pressure based on my recent finish to go out and compete and have some high finishes.  I think one mistake I made at Neely Henry, always analyzing my days on the water.  I should have fished for largemouths on the last day instead of the safer smallmouths. The rest of the season I will target the bigger bites and do what I can to get larger weights.

BB: You mentioned flipping, If you could only carry 1 color RI Sweet Beaver in your Legend Boat, what color would it be & why?

KB: I would have to say California 420, just seems to go to a variety of lakes and systems and catch fish.  Dark watermelon & watermelon red, which is a consistent color for most anglers.  I have had a lot of success at Old Hickory, Lewisville and the WBT Championship, its just a good all around color.  But its kind of like starbursts, I will start with Strawberry but will eventually work my way through the whole pack.

BB: In the past you fished some FLW Tour & Series events, Western Open, any plans to get back into those events on top or in place of the WBT?

KB: I certainly wanted to fish many events to learn about different techniques and bodies of water.  Now that I am fishing the WBT, my husband Andre fishes other events as well.  In 2009, he would support me on the WBT & I would support him at other events, its been a great time on the WBT.  For me its about enjoying time on the water and maintaining time for family.

BB:  Please comment on how you think the co-angler works for the WBT compared to how the Elite Series has went to the Marshall Program.

KB:  With the WBT it a great moment for ladies to get out and fish & learn about different lakes & techniques.  It builds their confidence to then move to the pro side.  Then they just need to get a boat and whack an Evinrude E-Tec on the back and get going.  Large part of my success was the support of my family and confidence and good equipment.

BB: Are you seeing sponsors showing increased interest in women fishinig?

KB:  Certainly, the biggest example was at the Classic.  The shear numbers of women and children coming up to me and showing an interest in getting out on the water with their families, husbands, boyfriend was amazing.  Truly overwhelming, I signed autographs for over 5 hours straight, until I had to leave for a TV engagement.  I had people try to follow me into the bathrooms for autographs.  It was just exciting seeing that passion and enthusiasm, which shows positive things for the future of the sport.  If course statistically I did not have the best classic, but its not always about the fishing catching.  Over all people were excited about me being there and coming up to me it should help grow the sport.

BB: In 2004 you fished a Walleye tournament in Walker, MN, what brought you to that tournament?

KB: Good research guys, especially for me being Australian, learning about different species is a passion for me. Trying different things help you learn things you can adapt back to bass fishing.  Part of my success get out there and try different style, at Leech lake as a co-angler I learned to back reel which is a skill I use for big smallmouth and spotted bass on light line.

BB: You have some experience with Lake Norman, you caught your biggest stringer in 2008 FLW Tour competition there, can you help John & I with our Fantasy Fishing picks?

KB: Bryan Thrift is a local and Alvin Shaw who is a local and good friend of mine from the FLW Tour.

BB:  Kim, thank you very much we appreciate your time.  You are not only a great bass angler but a great ambassador for the sport; We will watch you the rest of the year on the WBT.  Good Luck at Lake Quachita.

KB: Thanks Rich!  Thanks John!

Setting an ESPN Fantasy Fishing Line-up for Lake Wheeler

First off, wow I had no idea Wheeler was this week until I got my Fantasy Fishing email reminder from ESPN to make my picks; usually I am much better then that, kind of caught me off guard.  So lesson #1, go into your account and click the box that says you want a reminder, it works!  Also, if you have not done so lately, click on the tab that say “Renegotiate Salaries”, if you have Ike on your team, you will get $.5 of cap space back after last weeks debacle at Dardanelle.  That is something you should do after every event!

Lake Wheeler is a TVA impoundment, has good grass as well as all kinds of channel swings, shell beds and every other submerged structure an angler could ask for.  Sounds like things are shifting towards post-spawn in this area now.  That would setup great for your deep water structure guys, they can get in the right area and catch fish staging, and might get both coming & going.  I am sure there will be a couple sight fishermen in the Top 12, but that is usually a crap shoot to pick from.

There is a ton of local talent to pick from for Wheeler, just look at all the pros from Alabama!

With the exception of Smith Mountain, we have 3 of 4 TVA lakes on the schedule, so most of us should be able to lock into a somewhat more stable roster for awhile now.  When I think back to the really good year, I had in BASS Fantasy fishing, I had the same 4 guys on my roster almost all year and just flip flopped that #5 angler to match up to lakes.  I think I have been doing to much changing this year, so this week I did some wholesale changes.

Here are a few guys that I think would be solid picks that are not on my team.  Randy Howell, Greg Vinson, Boyd Duckett, & Alton Jones.  The breakdown on my team is as follows:
KVD – He will likely be on my team all year, he should be near dominate on these TVA lakes.
Matt Herren – Reehm got the axe, so I am picking up Herren, should be a great value, for the money probably on my roster til the bitter end.
Skeet Reese – Cost me some money to dump the Ike the Space Monkey in favor of Skeet, but Skeet is probably 1A right behind KVD over the past couple seasons.
Timmy Horton – I look for Horton to catch multiple 4 lb bass on the same cast with his Shaved Fat Free Shad on Wheeler, Guntersville & Kentucky Lakes!
Gerald Swindle– Hack was still too expensive after grabbing Reese, so G-Man seemed like a good value and should do well on these Alabama lakes and he loves docks, so Smith mountain should suit him well too!

So here are my Lake Wheeler picks, you will notice, only KVD remains from my Dardanelle disaster of a roster:

Table Rock Fantasy Fishing Group Winner!

Congratulations to Josh Pingel, he was the best of the best in our group at Table Rock.  Not quite good enough to get an FLW prize, but cashed in on this group.

Brief email interview with Josh and this is what he had to say on his strategy:
” I looked up the guys that did well on the lake in the past. Who has been doing good now, and who has done good on lakes close in detail and in the past in the month of March. The rest I guess was luck!

For Josh’s efforts, he has won a 9/16oz Citrus Shad Secret Weapon Lure QuickStrike Spinnerbait, a Decal and a 30% off promo code to order anything he wants in the Secret Weapon Armory!

Citrus Shad Quickstrike Spinnerbait

I am sure Josh will catch plenty of bass with this great spinnerbait!  Thanks to Secret Weapon Lures for helping out with the prizes.

Setting an ESPN Fantasy Fishing Line-up for Lake Dardanelle

Lake Dardanelle is once again much different then Amistad, but probably a little similar to the Red River classic site, so if you have guys on your roster from that event, maybe think about keeping them.  Lake Dardanelle is kind of hybrid body of water that is kind of lake, kind of a river, so keep that in mind.  For the most part, from what I read, its a fairly shallow fishery.  Based on what I have read & seen of this fishery, probably a power fishing technique will win.

It also seems that on river systems, home field advantage can be a little more important.  Guys like Scott Rook, Greg Hackney & Kevin Short have done real well in past tourneys on different sections of the Arkansas River.  I think it has to do with these small little quirky spots and trees and stuff like that, seems like you can bank on some of these spots for a few key fish in tournaments, that looms large in a tough bite, as reported right now.  It also sounds like there could be a little sight fishing if weather warms.

Hopefully somebody beat Mr. Mayer this week, he is hawging all the prizes

Here are a few guys that I think would be solid picks that are not on my team.  Randy Howell, Scott Rook, Bill Lowen.  The breakdown on my team is as follows:
KVD – He will likely be on my team all year, plus he has been strong here in the past, but where does he not catch them???
Clark Reehm – When I dropped Velvick, I looked down the list for a bargain pick, this is my bargain pick, local angle, good value, hopefully he has his best finish of the year here, cause I probably will rotate him out for Wheeler.
Iaconelli – When I picked up Reehm, I had all kind of cap space, so I added the Space Monkey, he is fishing hot.
Hackney – He remains on my team, actually doing research on whether I wanted Rook or Short, made me feel better about Hackney, he has been awesome on this system
Kevin Short – I wanted to pick Scott Rook, but searching through archives, especially old BFL results, Short is my guy this week.

Do not be surprised if only KVD & IKE are left on my roster for Dardanelle.

Don’t Judge

You may or may not have noticed the new Twitter feed on the left sidebar of my Blog.  Before you judge, I never though I would actually Tweet either, but I started looking into it and basically it seemed like a cool way to have a mini-blog update tool.  So my main reason to have the Twitter Feed on the Bassin’ Blog is so that I can give more short & quick updates using that.  Its also really easy to do from my phone.  I still kind of feel like a Twit for adding it, but what the heck….

I hope to give quicker tournament results and other bass fishing notes via this new feature.  So if you are not a subscriber (we are at 88 email subscribers), when you stop in to check the blog for new entires, glance at the Twitter feed as well.  If you are using Twitter, you can follow me there as well at – http://twitter.com/HellaBass

I will have my Lake Dardanelle picks for Bass Fantasy Fishing posted as well before Wednesday.

Lake Amistad Fantasy Fishing Group Winner!

Congratulations to Jason Mayer from Indiana, he was the highest scoring member of my Bassin’ Blog group for ESPN Fantasy Fishing AGAIN!!!.  Someone needs to step up at Dardanelle, take Mr. Mayer down a notch or he is going to run away with the overall title as well, just kidding, Jason is doing a great job
Jason has not won any BASS prizes, but he is cleaning up here and likely scored some Tackle Warehouse group prizes.  He is 16th overall on the total site right now.

Brief email interview with Jason and this is what he had to say on his strategy:
“I kept the Skeet, Ike, and Hack from my Classic line-up.  Then I just did some research on the web and ended up picking up Short and Williamson.

For Jason’s efforts, he has won a SWL Recoil Rig Field Kit, another decal & another promo code, guess he will have to give that promo code to a friend, because he already used it for SWL Expedition Kit, so he is set on Spinnerbaits & Buzzbaits!!  I think the boys & girls in Indiana better watch out if there is a good blade bite this spring!!!

I am sure Jason will catch plenty of bass as well when he employs the Recoil Rig to the already deadly Drop Shot technique!  Thanks to Secret Weapon Lures  for helping out with the prizes.

Its not too late to join my group, prizes will be awarded at every tournament and year end.  Only a week until the next tourney, time to sharpen your lineups to catch Jason!
