My Day 1 Classic Summary

So I spent most of yesterday bouncing around the internet, reading reports, blogs, etc.  Watching for updates, watched the live weigh-in and also have watched yesterday’s coverage on the deuce twice this morning.

Here are my takes & thoughts:
Looks like fish are being caught several ways, and both deep & shallow.
Charlie Hartley got it done with a jig in mid-depth areas, hopefully he can keep it up, he would be a great Classic Champ.
KVD is the man and always a thread if you have not figured that out.  He said he is sticking with his Strike King Series 5 crankbait, in a modified Sexy Shad, more of a Sexy Herring!
Sounds like Kotaro Kiriyama caught all his fish with a Wacky Jig and a Jackall Flick Shake worm.
Scott Rook & Bobby Lane looked to be both using an old reliable Shad Rap.
Ike appeared to get his bites on what looked to be a Football jig, which is surprising because McClelland & Remitz pretty much bombed on day 1.

I think tonights TV coverage will be much better, because they will better know who to follow.  Look for about half the guys on top to repeat and be the main contenders, while the rest of the field will flip flop a bit, but we will likely be down to less then 10 guys that have a legitimate shot at the crown going into Sunday and it may be less than that.

Other things I noticed:
Bobby Lane is running dual Power Poles on his Skeeter, never seen that before.  That may be a sign of a guy that really likes his shallow water.
Lot of guys said they wanted the Sun, so lets see if those guys make a move today, as reports are that the sun is bright in SC toady.

If you are bored today, waiting for updates on the Bassmaster Blog, bounce over to My eBay sellers page & check out the goods I am selling.  Got some great Lucky Craft Baits, Shimano Reels NIB, BassTrix, & more!

Tight Lines,
Rich

Time to Get Serious!

With the Super Bowl & the Daytona 500 in our rear view mirror, let us focus on what is really important…
The 2008 Bassmasters Classic!!!!

This really culminates the beginning of major tournament fishing for this year.  Sure we have had a few Triple A events (BASS Opens, FLW Series, PAA Qualifier), but now its time to get into serious major league bass tournament action.
So if you do not have your fantasy fishing line ups in, now is the time to do so.  Set reminders in your office calenders so you can stream live video of the weigh in on Friday afternoon.  Get your DVR’s all set to records the hours & hours of Classic coverage on the ESPN networks.  Vist the Classic Website, check out Charlie Hartley’s Blog….

5 Things to think about as you make your Classic picks:
1. Will another local take home the crown in likeness of Boyd Duckett, did he snap the jinx and now the flood gates will open?  Should you hitch your wagon to Casey Ashley, Todd Auten, or Jeff Coble?

2.  Will the guys that ruled at Clarks Hill with Football jigs reign supreme again at Hartwell? If so, maybe Mike McClelland or Derek Remitz can take the crown…

3.  Is the AllTell car of Ryan Newman winning the Daytona 500 a sign of things to come for Scott Rook?

4. Can Boyd be the first Classic champ to repeat since Rick Clunn?  He supposedly has some history on Hartwell

5.  Do any of the 6 Federation Nation contenders have what it takes to rock the boat in Brian Kerchal like fashion?

Check back soon, I will post my Fantasy & Super 6 picks sometime this week.

Also welcome my newest email subscribers, we are up to 60!!

Stopped at Bass Pro Shops Orlando Yesterday…

My work travels brought me to Orlando on Tuesday and I was fortunate to have a small window before it was time to go to the airport, so I found myself perusing the aisles at Bass Pro and gazing into their huge aquarium.  Man there was a ton of 8lb plus largemouth bass in there!!!

So here is what I bought:

Luck E Strike Bass Magic Shads – there are on of the may BassTrix imitations out there, seems like a nice bait

Yum Big Show Paddle Tail Worms, design by Terry Scroggins, these are great looking worms!

Yum Big Show Craws, also by Scroggins, they little critters look like flippin’ machines!

Well anyways, got a handful of bags of each of these.  Should be a nice addition to my addiction.  For those not fortunate enough to get to a Bass Pro Shops store, I think you can get all these on BassPro.com.  On another note, to feed my addiction, I have been pairing down some of my stuff on ebay lately, so if you are stocking up…  check out my Bass Fishing eBay Store

Also, welcome email subscriber #56 to my Bassin Blog!

Peter T Wins Again!

Peter T Southern Open Jan 2008

Peter “T” Thliveros, continuing along on the hottest two years of his career, won the Southern Open on the St. John’s River out of Palatka, Fla. on Saturday, February 19th, 2008 with an impressive three day total weight of 55 pounds, 3 ounces. The performance earned him a hefty check for $50, 657.

“I caught a lot of my fish on a Carolina rig. The key was my use of a black 5/8 ounce Peter “T” Finesse Carolina Weight coupled with a black Peter “T” Force Bead. There are a lot of Carolina weights around but they’re either too light or too heavy. The Tru-Tungsten 5/8 ounce is perfect, just the right weight to keep the rig down and under control,” said the successful BASS Elite Series angler.

Falcon does not dissapoint

Yesterday, Falcon Lake near Zapata, TX debuted in its first semi big time tournament as the FLW Stren Series visited this border reservoir.  Locals and pundits predicted that this one could break all the records, much like Amistad did when tournaments starting visiting there.  Turns out, they were right.

After catching 27 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday, Jeremy Guidry finished the event with 110 pounds, 2 ounces. That’s the heaviest four-day cumulative tournament weight in the history of both the Stren Series and FLW Outdoors as a whole. Guidry’s catch shattered the previous record of 105 pounds, 8 ounces set by David Mauldin of Tomball, Texas, during the 2006 Stren Series tournament on Lake Amistad. In fact, the top three finishers on Falcon all surpassed the previous record.

On top of this, it took over 62lbs for 3 days, just to sniff the money in this event.  Imagine catching 20lbs a day for 3 days in a row and head home without even a check….  Pretty crazy!  Big bass of the tournament was 12lbs 13oz, and several other 10lb+ bass were weighed on both boater and co-angler sides.  Unlike some tournament when only the boaters really catch them, it took over 96lbs for the co-angler title.

Read the FLW story and standings.  Moral of the story, is add this to your fishing destination list and keep an eye on future tournaments on Falcon.  Should be exciting when the Elite Series fishes Falcon in early April!

Last but not least, couple photos from FlwOutdoors.com sprinkled in!
