Falcon does not dissapoint

Yesterday, Falcon Lake near Zapata, TX debuted in its first semi big time tournament as the FLW Stren Series visited this border reservoir.  Locals and pundits predicted that this one could break all the records, much like Amistad did when tournaments starting visiting there.  Turns out, they were right.

After catching 27 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday, Jeremy Guidry finished the event with 110 pounds, 2 ounces. That’s the heaviest four-day cumulative tournament weight in the history of both the Stren Series and FLW Outdoors as a whole. Guidry’s catch shattered the previous record of 105 pounds, 8 ounces set by David Mauldin of Tomball, Texas, during the 2006 Stren Series tournament on Lake Amistad. In fact, the top three finishers on Falcon all surpassed the previous record.

On top of this, it took over 62lbs for 3 days, just to sniff the money in this event.  Imagine catching 20lbs a day for 3 days in a row and head home without even a check….  Pretty crazy!  Big bass of the tournament was 12lbs 13oz, and several other 10lb+ bass were weighed on both boater and co-angler sides.  Unlike some tournament when only the boaters really catch them, it took over 96lbs for the co-angler title.

Read the FLW story and standings.  Moral of the story, is add this to your fishing destination list and keep an eye on future tournaments on Falcon.  Should be exciting when the Elite Series fishes Falcon in early April!

Last but not least, couple photos from FlwOutdoors.com sprinkled in!

Secret Weapon Lure QuickStrike Spinnerbait Video

Check out the underwater video of my favorite spinnerbaits!

Great underwater footage of a truly innovative spinnerbait

Spinnerbaits account for over 12 million black bass caught in the U.S. every year. Many anglers carry a wide assortment of specialized spinnerbaits to be ready for any situation. Secret Weapon’s patented, no-tool, quick-change spinner blade attachments and innovative designs make for one heck of a bass catching bait!

Spinnerbait & Buzzbait Design Saves Time, Space, Weight, Money

Secret Weapon revolutionized spinnerbait fishing to save you space, time, weight, and money.

Secret Weapon precision hand-crafted spinnerbaits combine in-line spinning lures’ enticing sound and flash with the snag-resistant qualities of the safety-pin frame. Because each Secret Weapon Spinnerbait moves and sounds different in the water, its unique acoustic signature attracts more bass, musky, northern pike, redfish, snook, and other predatory fresh- and saltwater species than other spinnerbaits.

Secret Weapon spinnerbaits hook and land more fish. Look closely and the first thing you notice — no swivel and split rings! Free-floating, in-line blades improve tracking and reduce rollover on rapid retrieves. Blade attachments swing free to clear the hook point on strikes. The frame and blades of first-generation spinnerbaits can actually interfere with hook-ups.

Secret Weapon’s beautiful, powder-coated, chip-resistant minnow-profile heads slip through vegetation and brush. Mustad Ultra Point, Extra-long hooks, heavy-gauge stainless steel wire frames, and top-quality silicone skirts hold up well fish after fish, season after season.

Secret Weapon spinnerbaits surpass every other spinnerbait in the world, offering unparalleled value. Universal “Quick-Clip” blade attachments provide versatility and flexibility in lure presentation never before achieved in spinnerbait fishing. Blades are interchangeable with other lures in the Secret Weapon Innobait™ Tackle System. A few spinnerbait bodies and a handful of blades replace many heavy tackleboxes of conventional spinnerbaits.

Part of the reason of this post it to share some cool video and to test how posting videos work on my blog.

First Bass Fishing outing of 2008

Hey all,

Finally got back out after my late December trip was foiled by another motorist.  The weather was beautiful for Minnesota in January standards.  For the 6 hours we fished, the temperature hovered between 35 & 40 degrees.  Overall the fishing was solid as well, I did not catch as many fish as I did in my trip in late November, but the overall quality was better.  I am going to let the pictures do most of the talking

Good Start

Brushhog with a nice a smallie & I with a 10lb 15oz carp

Josh Douglaswith a 3lb 6oz & Ryan Brant with two goodns’

Another chunk, along with my biggest 3lbs 3oz, it looks cool with the snow & ice on its tail!

I caught several fish on a drop shot Gulp Alive 3 Minnow, but most of the fish came on either a 3″ Yum or Berkley Green Pumpkin tube, the biggest was on the Power Tube.

My totals: 49 Smallmouth, 3 Rock Bass, 3 Carp
Overall 4 guys: 207 smallmouth, 3 carp, 1 walleye, 1 northern, and handful of Rock Bass

I am sure most of you enjoyed sitting on the couch watching the NFL playoffs, but you missed out

P.S. Josh & I snuck out before the bass club meeting on Monday night as well……  check back for details.

More BassTrix Paddle Tail Tube Swimbait Alternatives

This a follow up on a Looking for Basstrix Paddle Tail Tubes? where I talked about the BassTrix and some of the competitors that have popped up to fill the demand created by this bait and its low production capabilities.

So if you do not want to jump on the eBay bandwagon or spend all day on the phone calling the few shops that have BassTrix, then here are a few more options….

Buy this ProductVenom Bad Shad Swimbait
The Bad Shad Swimbait is a 5″ solid bodied swimbait. The slender profile of this bait creates an slashing motion in the water. Included in each package is 3 swimbaits and one weighted Sickle Hook.

Optimum Heavy Cover Series Swimbaits
The Optimum Heavy Cover Series was designed for fishing swimbaits and the like weedless in big brush and over weeds.  These are solid body baits as well.

Luck ”E” Strike Bass Magic Swimbaits
These can be found online @ Basspro.com  Affordable hollow-bodied swimbaits feature lifelike paint schemes, a water-churning paddle tail, and five sizes to tempt any bass’ appetite.   From what I have read, they are a slit belly design.

Rainbow Worms Bowfish Paddle Tail Swimbait

The Rainbow Bowfish features a solid body with a slit down the belly to facilitate weedless rigging. It does have the same type of swimbait tail but this tail is no stranger to a vast number of soft plastic swimbaits. The fit and finish of the Rainbow Bowfish is typical of what one might expect of a hand poured worm.  Read a in-depth review here.

Ghost Baits Phantom Shads

These paddle tails have a hollow belly but solid head and tail.  It also says that all baits are custom made to order.

Kamikaze Treats
I have not found much info on these, not sure if they are solid body, slit body or hollow body…  It does say they are custom hand poured.  But its another option.

Happy hunting and hopefully some of you will catch some biggun’s on some of these new baits

Special welcome to email subscriber #55!!!

Or if you want some original BassTrix, I probably have some in my Rich Lindgren’s Bass Fishing eBay Store!

Secret Weapon Sponsors National Bass Fishing Trail

Secret Weapon Sponsors National Bass Fishing Trail

Brentwood , TN , December 31, 2007 — Secret Weapon Lures today announced sponsorship of the National Bass Fishing Trail (NBT) for the 2008 tournament season.

“Secret Weapon is creating a sensation across the nation. Our rapid growth is coming from anglers who try our spinnerbaits and prove their value on the water—and then tell their buddies,” says Joe Haubenreich, President of Secret Weapon. “We’ve seen our buzzbaits and spinnerbaits tied on the lines of the best adult anglers; now we want the next generation of great bass anglers to experience them as well. We approached NBT to help us do that.”

The National Bass Fish Trail serves youth anglers as well as adults. Their unique format pits adult anglers against adults and youth angler against other youth, providing a truly level competition field for all ages.

According to Mike Raney, NBT president, “Our members like having an edge on the water, and Secret Weapon gives them that. NBT is competing also, but as a fast-growing bass tour our quest is for greater angler participation, sponsorship, and prominence in the sport fishing marketplace, Partnering with a high-performance, high-value tackle company like Secret Weapon gives us an edge, too, in achieving our goals.”

“Secret Weapon engineered the first significant change in safety pin-style spinnerbaits since their inception 50 years ago. The improvements are apparent to anyone who uses them,” Haubenreich said. “Secret Weapon’s designs feature interchangeable, in-line spinner blade attachments that create flash and vibration unlike any conventional, swivel-mounted spinnerbait. The redesigned lures attract more strikes and deliver a higher hit-to-hookup ratio than do conventional spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Quick-change blade assemblies give better value and increase the versatility of these lures, and the free-floating, in-line blade attachments produce marked improvements in lure performance, too.”

Spinnerbaits are among the most effective fishing lures in an angler’s tacklebox. This company took a reliable lure and made it even better. Free-floating, in-line blades improve tracking and reduce rollover on rapid retrieves. Blade attachments clear the hook point on strikes, unlike the frame and blades of first-generation spinnerbaits that actually interfere with hook-ups. On the drop, Secret Weapon spinnerbaits remain horizontal, and not just one but all blades rotate freely. The angles and length of the stainless wire frame produce more solid hookups and improve casting accuracy and distance.

“Anglers know that to catch more fish they have to adapt their presentation to changing weather, water, and fishing conditions. We give them better tools to do that,” added Haubenreich.

Is it innovation that sets Secret Weapon apart from other tackle companies? Haubenreich explained, “Well, sure… our lures break new ground; but more importantly, they give anglers free rein to innovate. Some companies make innovative lures, while Secret Weapon builds tackle systems for innovative anglers.”

Here are a few highlights in store for NBT. Starting 1 Jan 2008, NBT members will enjoy a 10% discount on products purchased from the SWL online store. During the 2008 NBT Tournament season each winner on the junior side of the tournaments will receive a Secret Weapon. Then at the June 2008 NBT Youth Championship, each youth in attendance will add two more Secret Weapons to his or her arsenal. Furthermore, 2008 Adult Angler of the Year, 2007 and 2008 Adult National Championship Tournament winners, 2008 Youth Angler of the Year, and the 2007 and 2008 Youth National Championship Tournament winners will receive SWL Lure tackle packs and invitations to apply for SWL Prostaff positions.

Happy New Year!

Hey All,

First of all, I hope you all have a safe & fun new year’s eve.    Also many of you are probably itching to get started on a new fishing year.  Over all I had a pretty good year, it almost always can be a little better, but what would I have to shoot for next year if I won every tournament??  LOL!

Looking back, I could not have had as good a year as I had if it were not for my sponsors.  First off, I would like to thank my existing sponsors coming into 2007.  It feels good to help and grow companies that are committed to you as you are to them.
Tru-Tungsten
Tru-Tungsten - Discover the Feel!
Tru-Tungsten jigs and sinkers changed my fishing over the past two years.  It is hard to believe what a difference tungsten makes in feeling your bait and catching fish.  I could go on & on, but the 3/8 Green Pumpkin/Brown Tru-Tungsten jig has won me more money then any other lure in my box in the past two season, hands down!

Secret Weapon Lures
Secret Weapon Lures - Innovative Spinnerbaits & Buzzbaits!
Secret Weapon Lures spinnerbaitsbuzzbaits system has one simplified my tackle organization in my boat as well as put many a bass in my boat, not too mention it was a big part of my comeback at theBassmaster Weekend Series National Championship at Clarks Hill reservoir in November.

Next I would like to thank all my new sponsors that took a chance on me in the 2007 season, I will list them in order of when we started.
Optimum Baits
Optimum Baits - Leaders in SwimBaits!
When you think Optimum, you think swimbaits, that is true, they do make great swimbaits, but they manufacture some other great baits, like the Furbit Frog and hand poured worms.  They also import many great Japanese baits here in the US, like the Zappu Inchi Wacky Jig and ImaDeps hardbaits.

Stay N Charge
Stay'NCharge - Never Plug Your Boat in Again!
The Original StayNCharge and All Charge systems are great and let me spend more time on the water this past year and less time with my boat plugged in on land.  It also saved my but a couple times when I fished on the trolling motor really hard and another time when I had one battery die, it kept my one battery recharged so I could finish my day.

Stick ‘Em Lures
Stick 'Em Lures
I caught more fish on Salty Sinkers which are a hand poured senko style bait then I have caught on similar baits in this past year.  They have a great action that you can only get with a handpour as well as durability that many stickbaits do not posess.  Also, check out there other handpours and dock duker jigs.  Custom orders & colors available.

JKruz Eyewear
JKruz Polarized Eyewear
These glasses are the most comfortable & lightest that I have ever worn, plus the optical quality of the lenses are great.  I cannot wait to try these out next spring   My new Riptides served me well this fall fishing down south.
Riptide Series Not to mention they are reasonably priced, which makes them a great value.
If you get a little time, please click on some of these links and check out my sponsors offerings.

Lastly I would thank my latest (54th) email subscriber as well as all the others that signed up, I think I started the year with less then 20 and also there are many more that have my blog saved in their favorites as well as subscribed through RSS feeds.  Well, enough blogging, time to get ready for tonight’s festivities.
Later,

Adding to my bass fishing lure addiction

This is all about baits that I have recently acquired in the past month or so.

Got a couple packs of BassTrix Paddle Tail swimbaits,  I got all of them of eBay for near retail prices.  I have won a pack of trout, perch, baby bass, blue back herring & sardine.  The two pictured below are sardine and perch, they are my favorites so far.

6″ Sardine BassTrix Paddle Tail Tube Swimbait

6″ Perch BassTrix Paddle Tail Tube Swimbait

Another hard to find item, are these Big Joe Spoons, which are the custom spoons that Kelly Jordan used on Ulitmate Match Fishing.  The lures are a design of Lake Fork area Joe Spaits who’s company’s name is Weedless Lures of Emory, TX.  The ones Kelly used, did not have the dressed hook or stickers on them.

I also got two bags of the new Gambler Brutus Swimbaits.

Also below are a couple nice poppers Daritsu Yellow Magic and Lobina Lures Rico that I got from BassPro.com

Last but not least, got these very intersting dropshot worms from Japan

Any of you got any new cool, have to have baits?

Late Season Smallmouth Outing Folied

Disclaimer:  This is a rant/venting post.  Feel free to keep browsing.

Got up early to head out to the river for some open water smallmouth fishing this morning.  Halfway there my plan was foiled by some guy without a drivers license or insurance who obviously had now clue how to drive.  He was out of control and side swiped me and pushed me into the middle barricade on I-94.  Some justice served as he was cuffed and stuffed and his car hauled away.

So quickly visions of jumbo winter smallies were dashed and now having to get by with one car during the holidays and filing claims for repairs became the reality.  Also even if we get some warm weather during my time off during the holidays, I likely will have no mode of transportation to go fishing

I feel better now, Merry Christmas & Best Wished to all!
