More Tonka Time

Spent some more time on Tonka this week in preparing for the upcoming TOC.  Mixed results, did not set the world on fire, but learned lots of new water and found a handful of things I am pretty excited about.  Keep pecking around and you find a few fish like this fish on a Picasso Fantasy Football Jig .

This fish was 18.625″, estimated a little over 4lbs

In the end, I was not super concerned about catching fish this week, but spend time finding areas that will produce in about 3 weeks.

Also, been busy listing fishing stuff on ebay .  Polarized sunglasses, Fluorocarbon line and even a G-Loomis Flipping Stick!

Putting in my Time

Not much for tournaments lately, I kind of been busy spending time on Lake Minnetonka preparing for the Minnesota Federation Nation  Tournament of Champions in early September.  The lake goes off limits for me and my competitors this Friday.  It really is a shame that I have not spent more time on Tonka since I have essentially lived in the Twin Cities all my life.

The thing about Tonka, there is so much water and so many contours and stuff to learn.  That being said, I have been spending quite a bit of time out there mainly driving around with my electronics searching for new deep water spots.  The learning curve is still super steep on this lake, but I am trying to do as much homework as possible.  I did manage a few nice fish on new spots this past Sunday, as well as an 18″ Fatty Smallmouth that I had camera malfunction and did not capture.

Not sure what I will be doing during the off limits, maybe doing some fun fishing or maybe trying film some more for “All About Bass”.  So who knows how regular the blogging will be here in the short term, but in the mean time, take a listen to the latest “Twin City Limits” podcast .  Lots of talk about the BASS Post-Season, Sale of BASS, interview with Zona, and much more.  It is a real solid listen.  Listen to the embedded player here or check it out on TwinCityLimits.podbean.com or on iTunes.

It is a lengthy podcast, but I think it is a good one!

Tired of seeing your money leave Minnesota?

As we approach another Wisconsin fishing opener that is 2 weeks before our Walleye/Pike opener and 4 weeks prior to the Bass opener, I cannot help but wonder how nice it would be to keep all that early season fishing revenue in our state.  Over the years, my buddies and I have spent thousands of dollars each just in our small group by driving our boats and trucks, renting rooms, buying food, tackle and other supplies in Wisconsin.

I have spent quite a bit of time bass fishing in both Minnesota and Wisconsin and I can tell no difference in the fishing quality; which leads me to believe that the extra closed season has no benefit on protecting the resource.  So than, I ask, why not open our season at the same time as Wisconsin and take back the millions of dollars Minnesota anglers spend in Wisconsin every year?

I am sure resort, gas station, and bait shows in Minnesota are wondering the same thing…..

I feel only slightly better after writing this

Catch Up Time

Man not enough time to blog in the day these days….

Couple things to update on:
nullCheck out this 7lb 2oz pig that Richard Wong caught from a local metro lake, see a story here.  Hard to believe this thing did not weigh more, guess it was lacking in length, but not girth!  Either way, I am sure Mark Zona would label this as a “Man Bear Pic”, “Slaunch Kong” or “Fence Panda”!!!

I actually just add a new tournament to my tournament schedule, I will be fishing the Celebration Bass Tournament on August 1st on Lake Marion with my buddy Ryan Brant.  Because of scheduling reasons, we did not get to fish the Pan-O-Prog tourney this year, so this should be a fun replacement!

We are up to 95 email subscribers, don’t be afraid to join in.  Also, my Bassin’ Insider Blog is doing very well on VersusCountry.com, you should check it out, plenty of original content you will not find here.

Also, I am planning to do an ICAST product and lure review, hope to get that done soon.  It really was a blast this year, following all the Twitter and blog updates from the people attending the show.

Also, I think I am getting close to selling a few things on ebay, bit of a mid summer sale, so keep an eye out for that.

Well, guess that is it for now, hopefully I get another entry in before this weekend’s tournament, but if not wish me luck!

Don’t Wait

As I drove home last night, at times, driving rain, I thought to myself bring on the rain.  Sure it was tough to drive in at times, but warm rain really melts ice, and I need open water bad!  Plus most of the lakes I have drove by of late seem pretty low.  I thought we had received a lot of snow this year, but it does not seem like much of it ended up in our lakes, guess it evaporated instead of melting and going into our lakes.

Regardless, my boat is now ready as soon as the water opens.  The guys out at Extreme Marine did a great job, they always do.  I would not drive from Lakeville to Andover to get my boat worked on if they were not good.  My recommendation would be to put some of your tax rebate to good use (don’t waste it on some big TV) and give your outboard a tune-up for preventive maintenance.  Easier to catch something before it breaks and takes out something else with it, plus you will have that peace of mind when you do go fishing for the first time this spring, your motor will start   Nothing worse being that guy/gal hogging the boat ramp trying to get your motor started.

Not too mention, a good tune up will probably save you on oil & gas over the summer, they usually pay for themselves.  Things are starting to pick up at the marine shops as the weather warms, but you can still beat the rush if you can get your boat in before April.  My advice is to give the guys at Extreme Marine a call and get your boat in now, so you are not waiting to get it back on the first warm weekend when I am already out fishing!!!

Extreme Marine is located just north of the cities on HWY 65, 763-413-0025, ask for Mike or Bill and tell them I sent you, they will hook you up!!!

Good fishing,

Spring Cleaning leads to Tackle Sale

Last Saturday’s Tackle Swap meet inspired me to get into the basement and garage to do some sorting or my gear.  Time to decide which stuff I really use and which stuff could be sold or donated.  The past couple years I have donated a couple totes worth of stuff to youth fishing groups.  As I obtain more gear and tackle, some stuff has to go, most of it never even used, kind of like my wife’s shoes

As I came across stuff, it went into 1 of 3 piles:
1. Keep & Use
2. Donate
3. Sell on Ebay

As the ebay pile started to grow, I started listing some stuff in my ebay store.  I have more to go, but I have a decent amount of stuff up there now, including a G-Loomis baitcasting rod, Shimano Castaic reel, power craws, jigs and other stuff.  Check it out if you need some gear at a good price, I start all my auctions at $.98 with no reserves, the bidders set the fair price.   I will continue to add more gear, so check back often or save me as a favorite seller.  My tackle problem creates opportunity for all of you to get good deals on stuff.  Maybe your tax rebates will go a little farther on ebay…..

Listening to a Legend

It was the best title that I could come up with for my excursion to watch Denny Brauer’s seminar at Warner Dock on Saturday.  I will give the nod to my buddy Josh’s blog title (Schooled by Denny Brauer).  Speaking of which, I really miss that TV show, but I guess it did not get watched as much as “Beat Charlie Moore” and now we are stuck with the Mad Fisherman, rather then intelligent fishing programming like “Schooled by Denny Brauer” was.

Denny’s seminar focused mainly on flipping and picthing techniques which are his bread and butter, that is how he won his Classic Title and multiple AOY titles as well.  Overall, some of it was basic in my mind, some stuff reinforced my thoughts on how I fish shallow cover and I did pick up a few pointers as well, so all in all, worth the drive.  Heck, what else was I going to do when it was 15 degrees outside???

Of course, Denny plugged his signature Strike King Jig & Chunks, talked about the new Rage baits.  Mentioned that he will have some new signature rods coming out with American RodSmiths, and probably one of the cooler things was his new Ardent F500 flipping and pitching reel.  It has some unique things:
No Drag Adjustment, preset to 22.5lbs
Super Narrow Spool, only about 60 yards of Line
No level wind, because of skinny spool

According to Denny, they will be available in about a month or so, so watch for them here.Rich

Winter is Here, too early to start talking Fantasy Bass Fishing?

As I drove around near my home last night, I saw that one of my favorite lakes (Crystal Lake) was starting to ice over and the car thermometer read 29 degrees Fahrenheit, winter is definitely here and no more trips out on the boat unless I go south until probably April 2009 when I will likely hit the Mississippi river near Wabasha or Red Wing.  It got me thinking, how am I going to keep my sanity through the long Minnesota winter again this year.

First off, if you look to the left side bar, you will see a new logo under the Sponsor section.  I want to welcome Bass Tackle Depot as the newest partner of my Bassin’ Blog.  So when you get a chance, visit their site, they have some great prices on hard to find tackle and they offer free shipping on orders of $50, when don’t you spend $50 at your local tackle shop, and it does not cost any gas money to get on your computer!!

I recently got a reminder about FLW Fantasy Fishing.  After last year’s success, and all the money given away, I think Fantasy Bass Fishing will be bigger then ever.  So I think I am going to feature a new category this year called “Fantasy Bass Fishing Corner“.  I will do my best to break down all the FLW and BASS fantasy contests before each event, with my favorites and my lineups.  So if you are going to play, you can check my blog each week for tips and strategies to help you with your lineups.  I will also host a FLW league and award some prizes.  So think of this being like your favorite Fantasy Football site that you use to set your lineups on a weekly basis.

Also, with winter, brings the holiday shopping season, so I will do a top ten gift items for the bass fanatic in your life, look for that to start very soon.  I think if you are looking for gift ideas to shop for other or to help you fill out your wish list to share with the people that will be shopping for you, you will want to check back or subscribe via email so you do not miss any these great gift ideas.  Last I check, this Blog was up to 77 email subscribers, join the fun, let’s get to 100 in 2009!

I also am working on a few things to add to my multimedia section, could be some fishing web videos, additional podcast, or other stuff like that.

I will also be periodically hitting some winter bank fishing spots, so watch for me holding some nice smallmouth with snow on the banks behind me.  What I will not do to get my fix!
