Amistad Elite Series Day 2

Amistad proves to be tough bass fishing for the boat that I was in again today.  Tak really struggled today, only boating 4 small fish for 7 or 8lbs.  Far cry from yesterday’s 26lbs.  He was very frustrated, we tried a lot of different things.

I was fortunate to get one quality bite dragging a wacky rig in 20ft, it was a 6lb class fish and then I tacked on two other small keepers to give me 3 fish for 9-11 and that bumped me up two spots and kept me above the cut line.  Great to be fishing Day 3 and hope to make a move up the board as well as the payout

My father snuck into the cut as well with two more small fish.  I am fishing with Jason “Hardware” Quinn tomorrow.  Should be a good day, he has been solid so far, but who knows the fish are constantly moving right now and its all about adjustments.  My father is fishing with Ish Monroe tomorrow.

Just another quick note, I will be following up when I get back home and writing more detailed posts about my practice and tournament days including patterns, lures, & pictures.

Wish me luck tomorrow!!!

Amistad Day 2 Recap

Today was a tough day in the boat, we just were not on fish.  Some how I managed to still be in the cut line with 8-11 for 49th place.  Things should be better tomorrow, fishing with Takahiro Omori and he had over 26lbs today.  Caught all my fishin on Soft Plastics today.  Wow did Steve Kennedy and Scott Campell whack them today, 36+lbs for both of them and Campbell had a 12-7 Giant!!!

My dad had a solid day, with 16-6 and that was good for 11th, he is fishing with Todd Faircloth tomorrow.  Other then that, I plan on making a move tomorrow.

Fantasy Team is looking solid:

Amistad Update Tournament Eve

Hey All,

Had good travels, even got an upgrade to First Class on the way here   Stopped at Bass Pro Shops on the way to Del Rio, got in late and got my stuff ready for today.  Had a great day practicing with Derek Remitz today, caught some beautiful fish, more details after tourney.  I do not want to publish anything about he is catching his fish.

Angler’s Alley was cool, lots of interested fans, met several pros and other anglers, even signed a few autographs.  Even had someone recognize me from my website and that person was from Del Rio, kinda cool

My partner for tomorrow is Glenn Delong from Ohio, not really familiar with, do not know what to expect.  On the flip side, my father drew Denny Brauer for Day 1.  Check back tomorrow for updates.

Northland Tackle & Dean Rojas Unite

BassFan.com reports that Dean Rojas just signed a deal with Northland Tackle.  Most of you up here in MN & WI are very familiar with Northland Tackle, for their Junge Jigs and Slurpie Products.

Northland signs Rojas 3/2/2007

BassFans who hail from the Upper Midwest know all about the “Wall of Yellow” in almost every tackle shop – that gigantic wall of yellow bins with every type of Northland jig imaginable. But Northland Fishing Tackle’s not just about walleye, which it proved when it recently signed Elite Series pro Dean Rojas to its pro staff.

According to Northland, Rojas has been added to its Team Northland staff, and will promote the brand through tournaments and seminars, plus in-store and sportshow promotions.

About the deal, Rojas said: “In an effort to remain at the top of my sport going into the 2007 Bassmaster Elite Series, I’ve partnered with Northland Fishing Tackle to use and promote their premium line of soft plastics, specialty jigs, spoons, and worm weights. Northland’s line of Slurpies soft plastics are the most realistic and productive plastics I’ve ever used. They feature holographic FishFlakes and are salted and spiced with SowSauce.”

Northland president John Peterson said: “Dean is a true professional angler and we have the highest regard for his past accomplishments and future potential. Dean and I have teamed up with our engineers to design some very innovative and exciting new products for 2008. We’re going to combine my 37 years of manufacturing expertise with his knowledge and uncanny ability to modify lures to catch more and bigger bass. Look for the Dean Rojas Signature Series baits coming soon. You won’t be disappointed.”

This is kind of exciting for a MN company like Northland to back an Elite Series pro, I would expect them to come out with some more bass intenisve products

On another note, I just talk to Elite Series Pro Derek Remitz.  He was out on Lake Wheeler breaking in his new boat.  We chatted for a bit and if all goes well, we are going to go out on the water on Wednesday to practice on Amistad.  Should be a blast!!!

Post Classic Notes

Just cannot give enough Kudos to Boy Duckett.  He got it done in a big way like no home state angler ever has.  He is now Bass Fishing Immortality!
It will be interesting to see how he does on the Elite Series, he definitely should have some momentum and confidence to take to Amistad.  It will be nice to have the defending champ actually fishing the Elite Series this year.

I am also guessing that the Classic win could be a distraction for his Rookie Elite Series season, only time will tell.

As most of you saw, Duckett did most of his damage with a Crawfish Bill Lewis Original Rat-L-Trap 1/2 oz and Berkley Chigger Craw.  I did notice on the coverage he was basically crawling his trap, kind of slow rolling it.  He then employed the craw for punching the grass mats.

Skeet Reese ends up a bridesmaid but had a great tournament, he should do well on Amistad and the California swing.

Honestly, I am kind of glad KVD did not win, maybe I am just starting to resent his greatness, he’ll probably win AOY anyways.

And finally a standing ovation for Terry McWilliams, way to represent the Federation Nation, I am sure he caught most of his fish with his “Stupid Tube”

In closing, if anyone cares, I created a MySpace page, its mostly a personal bass fishing page….  oh, yeah, Mr. Veech you owe me $5 due to your poor picks in the Super 6!!!

Tight Lines,

Alabama’s new favorite son wins 2007 Classic

Boyd Duckett comes back and takes the title.  What a great Classic to say the least, Lay Lake was pretty awesome this week.  Other then we will never have a Classic any where near MN, this Classic first event of the year, seems to be a good thing.

Hat’s off to Federation Nation Terry McWilliams & 4th place finish.  More to come tomorrow

Great Start to 2007 Classic and Mild Fantasy Start for Me

Man there was a ton of fish caught today and many a nice bags.  Boyd Duckett was a stud today and a fantasy steal.  You would have to be a great Bass Fishing Mind to put him on your team….  Boy am I glad I did not swap out Duckett for Remitz like I almost did, phew….

All in all, I thought all the Classic Coverage was very solid!

Classic Media Blitz

So I have jumped on Bassmaster.com and BASSinsider this morning and there seems to quite a few options.

First off, you can see video clips from several pros here, this morning some had sounds issues, others were fine

Also, if you act quick, there is a live chat with anglers on the water right now (9am – 10:30am CST)

There is also a Classic Blog that seems to be updated and has some semi-live info, for instance Biffle has had engine troubles &  Russ Lane is reported to already have a limit along with Jeff Reynolds, I knew Lane would not let down my Fantasy team

Also tune in this afternoon for Live Streaming Web Video & RealTime Leaderboard of the weigh-in, I watched it last year and it was very solid.  Look for it around 4:45PM CST

I also found a cool piece on BassFan.com about the 6 Federation Nation qualifiers, nice little read.

Enjoy, and oh yeah, get your DVR’s fired up so you do not miss any of the coverage on ESPN2.

Bassmaster Classic Starts Tomorrow

Man time flies, cannot believe it is here.  I need to go home and clear space on the DVR so I can record all the coverage.  I am also excited to watch the weigh-ins on the internet and live chats and all that Jazz

Other cool stuff….
Jason Quinn’s unbelievable new ride
You can see it at the Classic, I also hope to check it out at Amistad, I stayed right next to Randy Howell and his Purolator ride last year.

Also, last reminder to get your fantasy lineups set for the Classic, here are mine……

I was really torn on the last spot, almost went with Derek Remitz over Boyd Duckket, I am also mad about leaving .3 pts on the table…

Jottings from Presidentts’ Day

Where to start, where to start….

Congrats to the Jr. Anglers who are World Champs!!!  South Africa’s Jeffrey Toplis (14 years old), and Kentucky’s Kalem Tippett (17, pictured to right) persevered through Sunday’s less then optimum condistions at Alabama’s Logan Martin to win their respective age divisions at the 4th annual Junior World Bassmaster Championship. With the win, each angler took home a fully rigged bass boat & $5,000 in scholarship money & a trip to Disney World.  Unfortunately the qualifier from my jr. club did not have a great, did not weigh a fish, buts sounds like he learned a ton from fishing two days with Mike Wurm and look forwards to watching the rest of the Classic events this week.  Knowing Cody, this will not be his last trip to the JWC

Also, congrats to Aaron Hastings on his big win at Lake Travis this week, I believe this is his first major victory, I hope to have pattern & lure information later this week.

BassFanArmy.com opened its registration for FREE Life Membership, better check it out….

My FLW Fantasy opener was solid, 7th in my group and 700 something overall, I look to build some momentum going forward

Also, finally some info the WBT on the winning pattern from Amistad:
It sounds as though Juanita Robinson caught here monster bag to make the come back by casting a JDC Gibroni (Senko Style Bait in daiquiri and watermelon). across a channel that dropped into 22ft of water, the Gibroni was paired with a 1/32oz Parasite Weight Clip to get it down to the fish.  The previous days catches were on Vertical Lures Tube-X (grn pumpkin) and Lucky Craft Pointer (chart shad) and all her baits were doused with CB’s Hawg Sauce.

Until tomorrow….
