My Favorite Bass Fishing Podcasts
Bass fishing related podcasts are becoming increasingly popular, wether anglers are downloading them to ipods, other MP3 player or just listening on their home or work computers, its an increasingly popular way for anglers to learn more about bass fishing and their favorite anglers
So in no particular order, here are the podcasts I like to listen to, take a listen and see what you think.
Armchair Anglers – Bo Crawford (you may have read some of his stuff on BassFan.com) and Clint do a great job, covering tournament bass fishing and other hard hitting topics like the Gulf oil Spill. My only complaint is I only get one new episode a month.
Bass Fishing in the Midwest – Fortunately John Haynes’ interview skills are better than his fishing skills, he would admit to this as well. It would be good if there was a little consistency from this show, guess I just need to keep a good eye on my iTunes account for new episodes. Oh yea, closed circuit to MIckey, speak up next time!
Tournament Fishing Radio – Kory & Eric are based out of Missouri, they have a nice mix of national and local bass fishing coverage, but I do think they like swimming grubs a little too much ![]()
So take a listen to my favorite episode with Gues Mark Zona
And also are most recent episode about how to catch fish now on Mississippi River Pool 2!
Twin City Limits – Okay, so I am co-host of Twim City Limits, but take a listen, I am pretty sure you will like it. You will learn to laugh at Lazy Ikes fantasy bass fishing picks as well and now that bass fishing is heating up in MN, lots more local tournament info and fishing tips. Catch us on iTunes as well, if that is your thing.
Ultimate Bass Radio – I have only listened a little bit, decent show, just a little too west coast for me to really get into it, but I am sure some of my readers are West Side as well!
Bass Zone Radio – Mark Jeffreys know bass fishing, they always have top level pros as guests and they don’t take themselves too seriously.
Blackwater Bassin – Ken does a nice job, ecspecially if you are interested in the upper Mississippi River bass tournament fishing scene.
Well, that is my short list, if you got some recommendations leave a comment!
Mississippi River Pools 2 & 4 tourney recaps
A hectic schedule has not really allowed me to get out bass fishing as much as usual, I guess a 2 yr old and daughter #2 will likely be arriving any day will slow even the most dedicated bassers down. This past weekend I had 2 small tournaments on Mississippi River Pools 2 & 4 respectively.
Friday afternoon, I was able to get out for a couple hours to check water levels and a few areas on Pool 2 for Saturday’s tournament. Caught a few fish flipping a 4″ black neon tube on a 3/16oz Tru-Tungsten sinker . Also, inspired by K-Short’s performance on Lake Pickwick I threw my Ima Shaker around on Friday afternoon. It did not take long for my road to bow over with a beautiful 4.5lb largemouth cranked up off a shallow laydown.

Needless to say, this fat largie had to have this Shaker and CHOKED IT!!
The bite on Saturday morning was slower than I anticipated, it took about 3 hrs of tube flipping and one nice smallie on the Ima Shaker crank before I had my limit. It was time to start covering some new water. In the next area I started working my shallow crank around laydowns and quick culled 2 fish and caught a couple others with the Shaker . Now my bag was all 15″ plus fish, with one 17″ class fish. Hit a few more areas with nothing, returning to a stretch that produced several bites the evening before resulted in one broken line on a big fish and a nice keeper for my partner. The next area gave up a few more small keepers and than finally a nice 17.25″ largemouth. The last 90 minutes we spent in an area closer to the main channel for smallies. The area gave up many smallies earlier in the day and a few later in the day, but we did not get anything to help us. I ended up with a respectable 14.83lbs but that was only good enough for 5th.
My Key Gear from the Past Weekend
Sunday we launched from Colville Park near Red Wing. Again I started in a back cut with wood & grass. I caught a nice keeper largie pretty quickly on the Ima Shaker and my partner and I also both flipped one keeper each. My next area was occupied by a competitor and we cranked the outside edge, I got one squeaker smallie on the Shaker and several shorts, white bass and walleyes. We then tried some new water, caught some short fish and then ran to Pepin to try some other areas. My 2nd Pepin area produced keepers for me and my partner. My Ima Flit and a small beaver bait on a 1/8oz Picasso Shakey Football head worked best on my Lake Pepin rock spots. I was able to fill out a small 4 fish limit on the lake; we then returned to Red Wing to look for some better fish. Nothing happened, just a few more walleyes and shorts on the crank. My 4 fish weighed 6.7lbs, which on a tough day was good enough for 4th.
No wins this weekend, but the weather was beautiful and it was great to get out fishing against the guys in the club. I hope to get out on the opener to film an episode of “All About Bass” Catch ya’ll later!

Tired of seeing your money leave Minnesota?
As we approach another Wisconsin fishing opener that is 2 weeks before our Walleye/Pike opener and 4 weeks prior to the Bass opener, I cannot help but wonder how nice it would be to keep all that early season fishing revenue in our state. Over the years, my buddies and I have spent thousands of dollars each just in our small group by driving our boats and trucks, renting rooms, buying food, tackle and other supplies in Wisconsin.
I have spent quite a bit of time bass fishing in both Minnesota and Wisconsin and I can tell no difference in the fishing quality; which leads me to believe that the extra closed season has no benefit on protecting the resource. So than, I ask, why not open our season at the same time as Wisconsin and take back the millions of dollars Minnesota anglers spend in Wisconsin every year?
I am sure resort, gas station, and bait shows in Minnesota are wondering the same thing…..
I feel only slightly better after writing this ![]()
Love the alliteration of Pickwick Picks
Well, just finish a long night of garage cleaning. My boat will be spoiled this season with how good the garage is looking! Not a lot of time to the deadline, but here are my Fantasy Picks for Pickwick:
KVD
Skeet
Horton
Kriet
Greg Vinson
To hear the how and why behind each pick and hear Greg Huff’s picks (use these as guidelines of who not to pick…. ) Take a listen to the following Podcast!
We have hit 111 email subscribers on the Bassin” Blog and several hundred to the Twin City Limit podcasts, most on iTunes! Well that is about it for now!
Explanation for lack of blogging and fishing reports..
No excuse is a good excuse for not fishing, but….. Travel and a garage project has kept me from taking my boat out of storage and getting out fishing again in April. Today was a productive day towards finish needed garage activities to free up garage. Tomorrow, I may try to take my 2 year old daughter out for a short shore fishing trip if the weather is nice, this would be her first time fishing.
In the meantime, here is another fishing video to entertain you. This is a preview/teaser for episode #5 of “All About Bass” – The Bass Closer. I think you will find this pretty entertaining!
If you like it, give it as thumbs up and/or comment on YouTube! Congrats to Skeet Reese for his win on Smith Mountain and Glenn Browne for his win on Tellico / Fort Loudin today.
Until next time!
Smith Mountain Fantasy Picks and Mark Zona Interview
Too much time between blog these days, lot of things going on. Our Smith Mountain Fantasy Fishing picks for Bassmaster Elite Series have been on our podcast site for about a week, but if you did not catch it, listen below. We break down how we think KVD starts his comeback and who else we like in this tourney. In short, I went KvD, Skeet, Kriet, HIte and Crews this week, take a listen below to understand why…..
Also, earlier this week, we caught up with ESPN and World’s Greatest Fishing Show’s Mark Zona. We broke down a bunch of topics, football, Fantasy Fishing, WGFS, Elite Series, KVD and much more; We talk about what happened to KVD in Cali, Smith Mountain and what we expect from anglers like KVD, Kriet, Hack and many others. I know the begining of this podcast sounds like previous show, but just a few minutes in Z-Train joins the conversation and things heat up!
Other than that, I did get out and do about 4 hours of fishing down in Red Wing on Saturday. The boat caught 4 chunky smallmouths, we each dropped a good smallie and Paul tangled with a river slaunch of a largemouth and was left with his tail between his legs. Not the greatest outing for fish catch, but an awesome day weather wise and it just felt good to be in the boat again.

Above is my first chunky smallmouth of the current season, duped on a 4″ Green Pumpkin/Blue tube on a light Tru-Tungsten sinker!
New Favorite FLW Pro
We recently did a great interview with FLW Pro Angler Bryan Thrift, he is a great interview and I think I may be a Yankee version of him in the making. Take a listen and let me know what you think! Bryan breaks down how he won the FLW Lake Norman tournament and some great bass fishing tips.
His comments about pre-tournament reasearch and dock fishing are particularly interesting! Find some more great podcasts here – http://twincitylimits.podbean.com
On another note, I have yet to get out fishing even though the ice off the lakes, maybe I will get out on Friday afternoon. If you are looking for some tips on saving some bassin bucks, take a look here.
Also looking for something to do this weekend, see below! St Jude Fundraiser is a good time and a great cause!
