Loose Threads

Nothing too exciting but here are a couple things I have been meaning to blog about:

I helped collaborate on this Swim Jigs 101 article.

This video and article about winter smallmouth fishing posted a couple weeks ago.

My dad has been sending me some of his better catches from Lake Falcon, here is his biggest of the season so far, sounds like the bite is really picking up!  His batteries were dead in the scale, he is thinking it was close to 10lbs!

Still waiting for ESPN and Bassmaster to open their Fantasy Fishing league for this season.  Other then that, I have not been fishing since December, but I got a trip planned for the last weekend in February!

Join my FLW Fantasy Bass Fishing Group & Win Free Prizes

Last year was a pretty good success, we had almost 200 participants join my group and I gave out great prizes from Tru-Tungsten and Secret Weapon Lures.  Look for more and bigger prizes this year.  I will give out prizes to the highest finishers in my group that do not win FLW sanctioned prizes.
So here is what you do to join my leauge:
Got to FantasyFishing.com and enter league # 11590 and Password: bassin

It’s just that easy, if you are feeling like you need an edge to win my or FLW’s cash prizes, check out Player’s Advantage! Last year, members won prizes at 4X the rate.

Late Fall Smallmouth Trip

This past Sunday looked to be a nice day, I still had not winterized my boat and I figured the Vikings playing the Lions was the equivalent of a second consecutive bye week.  All this added up to a smallmouth trip in my boat.  All in all, I caught 8 or 9 pretty nice smallmouths and a northern, no giants but a pretty good day.  Water temps were 40-42 degrees.

I caught one nice fish on a Sexy Shad Red Eye Shad Lipless crank, another on a Scrougner head / fluke combo, the rest of my fish came on a 3.5″ Coffee Tube rigged on a 1/8″ Tube Jig head.

This outing also served as an opportunity to get some filming done for a future All About Bass episode.  So enjoy a few of the raw footage of a few of the fish catches!  With the cool temps and the frigid water, my Akinetix Moisture wicking undershirt, Multi-Sport Gloves and AK Beanie were integral in keeping comfortable and grabbing the chilly smallies from the water.  Now, I think I need to get my boat out once more…….

All About Bass – Episode 2 – Part 1 – Practicing on Mississippi River

Episode 2 of “All About Bass” is finally off the production floor and ready for viewing.  This episode brings us to the Mississippi River Pool 4, where I am practicing for an upcoming Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament.  Little bit like Joe Thomas’ “Angler On Tour” show that used to be on the Outdoor Channel.

In this segment, I pick apart a backwater cut with a few different baits:
3/8oz Tru-Tungsten Jig – PB&J
1/4oz Super K Swim Jig – Blue
Strike King Game Hawg – Bama Bug on 3/16oz TT Weight & 3/0 Youvella OWG hook

Segment 2 will be coming soon, so check back to the blog often.  Or better yet, consider signing up with Email or RSS subscription so you never miss an episode!  You can also find these videos by searching YouTube or checking out MN Sun Newspapers or check out My YouTube Channel.

“All About Bass” is produced, photographed and directed by mnsun.com editor Greg Huff. If you are a professional in the fishing and/or boating industry and have a story idea, a product to test, or would like to sponsor a segment of the show, contact Greg at [email protected].

Mississippi River – Bassmasters Weekend Series Tournament #2 – June 28, 2009

Yesterday was my 2nd Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament, I was able to get two days of practice in for this event.  It sure would be nice to get some more time so I could expand my water and areas, but there is only so much time.  Based on my practice, I had one really strong area that I felt good about and a couple back up areas, plus some stuff that I had fished in that past that I felt could produce a few bites in a pinch.

I drew boat #15 and a heck of a nice co-angler named Sam.  We arrived in my starting area and were the only boat there, I shut down a little short and used the trolling motor to get into position and as we approached I saw a surface swirl.  All ready with my Yellow Magic Popper in hand, I started firing casts towards the area the fish were boiling and they started biting pretty fast and furious.  A mixture of smallies and largemouths were biting, as well as some white bass and a walleye.  Once the topwater fizzled I switched to a Fork Craw on a mojo rig and caught my big fish of they day, 3.49lbs.  I continued to flip the grass edge with a Game Hawg on a 3/16oz Tru-Tungsten weight and 3/0 Youvella OWG hook, boating a few small keeper largemouth.
NEW Yellow Magic® Japanese Topwater Baits
Since things really slowed down and we made several passes through with no bites, we started running through my backup areas.  The next couple spots we had a couple frog blow ups, but no fish.  The 3rd area I started flipping my Game Hawg along an eel grass edge and quickly caught a nice chunky largemouth, as I dropped that fish in the livewell we drifted into a bunch of weeds, as I tried to trim the motor up I noticed was really slow and unresponsive, I knew that my starting battery must have been getting very low.  Long story short, we lost almost 2 hours trying to get a jump and trying to revive the fish I had as they almost died with out the aerators running for that time.  Big Thanks to Paul Strege for helping me get back in the game.

From that point, we made a pass back through my starting area with the motor running with no more fish.  Next I hit up a wing dam and another main river rock spots, just got bit off by a northern on the latter.  I decided to try an area that I caught some good fish flipping wood in the first tournament, it turned out to be a good decision, as I picked up a really nice keeper on 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten jig tipped with a rage chunk and a 3lb largemouth on a baby brush hog, as I used up all my Game Hawgs on some smaller fish prior.  It was pretty much the end of the day at that point, so we strapped everything down and headed back to Alma for weigh-in.

Video of me weighing my fish, see my other videos to see interviews with top finishers!

One thing I have noticed is that I have been fishing extremely clean this year and I think a lot of it can be attributed to switching over to the new Youvella hooks for my soft plastic applications.

I was about the 10th angler to weigh and was the leader at the time with 14.21lbs, it did not last very long, but I held on for a solid 8th place finish.  It was a nice little pay day with a 78 boat field and it boosted me from 12th to 3rd in the Angler of the Year points.  End of July is the 3rd tournament down at Prairie Deu Chien, I have little experience down there, so I need to make some time to practice between now and then.  I have a couple club tourneys in July, I may have to forgo practice for those and go fish PDC.

Tight Lines,

More Blogging!

Actually you may have noticed a slight decline in activity on this blog, partly because I have been commissioned to provide content for a new blog for VersusCountry.com.  If you head on over to the Versus Country site, you will find a Bassin’ Insider Blog that I am writing for them.

If you like what you find here, then I suggest checking it out, it is all original content and you will not find it here at the Bassin’ Blog.  You will find less about my personal fishing endeavors at the Bassin’ Insider, but more about bass intensive fishing techniques, FLW Tour happenings, and general bass fishing topics.  As of now, you will find 2 fresh entries every week on the Bassin’ Insider Blog, if things continue to go well, it could be more.  There is already 3 weeks plus of content posted, so your first trip will be well worth it.  Plus there are a lot of other cool fishing articles and videos from your favorite Versus Network fishing shows.

So if you have a thirst for more bass fishing info, please check it out when you have a chance.  And if you like what you find, please share with your friends and fellow anglers!

See you on the water!
