Productive Minnesota Bass Fishing Opener

Yesterday finally came and now has went.  Over all it was a good day, once I got boat back on trailer and put the plug in….   After the plug incident, club tourney partner Rick and I were fishing by 7am, early morning water temps were around 59 degrees.  I started out throwing a 5″ Optimum BLT Swimbait, I caught one decent fish on that and Rick picked one up on a spinnerbait.

My3rd fish came on a 3/8oz jig, pictured below.  Weighed 4lbs 3oz on my new handheld scale. Quite obvious she was still beautiful, fat and pre-spawn.

We kept hunting and pecking around, picking up a few fish here and there. Saw a few fish cruising and a few on beds, I did catch one of a bed, just to get a little practice in case some are still there during next week’s tournament, I caught a 3-5 of a bed just to prove I could, the rest I kind of left alone.

We had lulls and stretches of good fishing, fish did seem to be grouped a little.  I caught good fish tubes and ring frys as well.  All in all, we caught about 20 fish or so and I capped the 5 hour day off with the 4-11 beauty below.

All in all a pretty good day, would’ve been fun to stay out for a few more hours, either way I feel good about next weekend’s tournament.  I hope to get out tomorrow morning as well.  How did the rest of my fellow Minnesotans do this weekend?

Don’t sleep on the Shaker

Been doing a bit of fishing lately.  One thing has become apparent in this low to mid 50 degree water; the IMA Shaker with it’s flat sides and more subtle action is out producing the new highly touted IMA Square Bill designed by Bill Lowen.

Pictured above is the nicest bass I caught the other day, but put a bunch in the boat on an IMA Shaker thrown on 12lb Fluoro on my brand new Dobyns 684 CB Crankbait Rod, pretty sweet rod for jerkbaits and light wooden baits like the Shaker, Shad Raps and several other baits.

Both great baits, but this time of year, its hard to beat the profile and action of the Shaker, so my advice, while the traditional Square Bills are getting all the headlines right now, if you live up north, stick with the Shaker for a few more weeks.  Then when water hits 60 degrees and up, pick that Square Bill up and do work!

As you can see, they were eating the SHAKER!

Got the itch…

A rigorous travel schedule has kept me off the water other then throwing a little crappie spinner from shore for a few minutes on Saturday.  I did catch one small fish pictured below.  But it’s not really doing an adequate job of scratching my itch.  Kinda want to get out on the boat, maybe towards end of this week, I can make some time.

Anybody noticed all these silly looking multicolored bar code looking things in all the fishing magazine these days?  Well if not or you have and have no clue why, read on. They are “Electronic Tags
and are a relative;y new and cool new way to connect print media or any
other visual media with Digital media.  These tag barcodes are embedded
with a URL or a link to a video, website, or pretty much anything you
can think of…

Curious, how it works, simply download the FREE application or “App” from the website http://gettag.mobi
or download from your appropriate App Store.  You can even test on the
Tags in this article.  First will bring you to a Strike King Ad other
will bring you to a YouTube video demo of how to use the tags with my
Blackberry.Interestingly enough, two large fishing and outdoor companies
are embracing this technology.  See my YouTube video demonstrating how these tags work.

From a consumer’s perspective, these technologies get me  excited. Just think, if this technology becomes
widely accepted and embraced, consumers could scan small tags off of the
package, download customer reviews, video ads, much more then you could
ever fit on a package. So you scan a code on a new lure, get straight
talk from the pro that invented it in video form or even get an instant
coupon.

I think they are cool, do you?  Or a huge waste of time?

Another MN Bass Closer Passes

This past weekend the bass fishing season closed in Minnesota and for most inland waters does not open until end of May.  I did not get out on the Bass Closer this year, had too many other things to juggle, but did have a brief bass fishing outing on Lake Bartlett in Arizona earlier in the week, where i caught some of these monsters pictured below…..

As a tribute to the Bass Closer, here is a video of last year’s bass closer and here is a post from 2009 to check out as well.

Finalized my Fantasy Fishing picks for Beaver Lake, working on getting Beaver and Bassmaster Classic prizes out still, trying to get caught up, be patient.  My Picks:

Take is easy all!

Went fishing this morning

And because of the nice weather, so did everyone else and their brother apparently, LOL!  Got up early to beat the rush, and we did, but their wasn’t much of a morning bite at our first stop.  By the time we got to 2nd area at 8:30am, there wasn’t much room to move around, so we staked out our little stretch.

Today my buddy and I each caught 8, mine were 2 on IMA Square Bill, 2 on a tube & 6 on a shakey beaver.  I ended up getting one over 3lbs and another right at 4lbs, so at least there was some quality today.  This could very well be the last trip on this fishing license, as the bass season ends at the end of this month.

This fish is bigger then it looks, between 19″ & 20″ when referenced against my Dobyns 702 SF .

That being sad, listed a few things on my Bass
Fishing

eBay
Store
this weekend and here is a nice article on how not to ruin your fishing equipment over the winter.  Some things are simple, but I think many anglers still make these mistakes.

First Outing of 2011

January almost slipped away without a fishing trip, but I got out with one of my bass buddies a couple days ago to chase some winter time river smallmouth bass.  Part of my drive to get out and so some fishing, was the fact that I had this new Ima Lures Square Billed Crankbait .  You are probably saying, who cares, I got lots of crankbaits.

Well, this crankbait is brand new and not being released for a few more weeks at the Bassmaster Classic in New Orleans, but I managed to get my hands on one a few weeks back and have been wanting to get it in the water so bad to check it out.  Largely driven by curiosity and because I have done very well on the Ima Shaker crankbait as well.  Square bill cranks are versatile lures, but let’s face it, 25 degree air temps and near freezing water temps are not what most people would call ideal for these style baits.  This area that I fish, I catch almost all my fish slow dragging a 3″ Green Pumpkin tube on a 1/9oz head.  So my intentions of bringing this bait along was more along the lines of checking out the action, seeing how it deflected off rocks and cover, if I caught a fish, that would have been a bonus.

I rigged up the Chartreuse Shad (Sexy Shad) Square Bill on 15lb fluorocarbon, mainly because I was a little worried about losing it.  Fishing a crankbait from shore up hill in a snaggy & rocky environment is a recipe for getting hung up.  On my first cast, I noticed a nice strong vibration that felt good and then it got shallow enough, that I could feel it pounding the rocks and deflecting and searching around.  On my 2nd cast, I just started to feel those rocks and BAM, fish on!  Rewarded with a nice chunky smallmouth.  Pretty cool, was it a fluke?

I used the bait off & on the rest of the 4 hours we fished. The other productive baits for me, was a 1/8oz Tube Jig and 3″ tube and a Zappu Inchi Wacky Jig head with small green pumpkin worm.  Both of these finesse lures produced fish on a tough bite, but then again so did Bill Lowen’s signature crankbait.  I ended up smallmouth on the Square Bill out of the 21 total.  The average size of the crank fish were larger and the strikes were violent, which a nice change of pace to the wet leafy bite of a tube bite.  I think this is a testament to the strike triggering action of this new bait; I can only imagine what it will bring when spring is here and its actually typical square bill conditions.

Few other things that stand out, I only had 8 bites and hooked 7 of them solidly.  This tells me they were eating the bait and the hooks are sharp and well balanced with the bait.  I also snagged a double digit carp in the back, not really babying it, I quickly got the fish in and the hooks held up great, strong & sharp!  Lastly, never once did I get hung for even a second, even with constant bumping and grinding in shallow rocks and wood in a current situation, this is a 4 wheel drive crankbait.  I envy what Bill Lowen will be able to do with this bait at this year’s Bassmaster Classic on the Louisiana Delta.  So post Classic, keep an eye out, these should start showing up in your favorite online stores real soon!

Been Tough Sledding

Since early November, it’s been super tough to find cooperative water and weather conditions that correlate with my availability to take advantage of them.  I have been able to get out twice.  The first time was very solid, catching over 40 smallmouth and the second time only 8, which is still far superior to catching any amount of fish through a hole in the ice like many of my fellow Nordic  anglers.  Here are a few pics from my trips.

The biggest at around 3.5lbs, shown with my Dobyns 702 SF and recently purchased Shimano Ci4 3000 Reel.

This one ate a Weedless Huddleston Shad Swimbait

This one was not super big, but had a peculiar hunchback feature that i have seen on Largemouth a few time, but never on a smallmouth bass.

My best baits have been 3-3.5″ green pumpkin tubes and 3.5″ beavers on Picasso Shakedown heads

Hope you all had a great Christmas.  I am excited to spend my $25 gift cert to BassTackleDepot.com that I got for Christmas.  Even with the “tough sledding”, I’ve got something in the works to cure the winter blues, more to come on that soon.

My Deer Hunting Season thus Far…..

Deer hunting has been super slow, and it’s not necessarily because I’ve been a bad shot, because if it was then I could get some some shooting glasses from https://www.reranger.com/collections/shooting-eyewear to try and help improve my precision. No, I’m afraid my deer hunting prowess has been almost permanently sidelined because I have been fishing the whole time. Yep, you got me, too busy fishing all the time, haven’t been caring as much about hunting anymore.

I’m sure that I’ll get into deer hunting again though, maybe if the novelty of fishing wears down. I might need to read up more on online resources like Riflescopescenter.com guide to mounting a scope and others. I might also need to keep an eye on my licenses just in case they expire, I heard some poor man got pulled over, and because his concealed carry license expired (see: https://gunlawsuits.org/gun-laws/illinois/concealed-carry/) they took the guns he had in his car. Don’t want that happening to me if I decide to get back in the game. For now I’m content with my fishing, even at this time of year.

Most of you think the fish have long stopped biting, no true. Even water temps have been 38-42 degree my last few trips, still catching plenty of fish. My guess I will continue to be in denial until about February 28th when Minnesota bass season officially closes.

This time of year, I find it important to gear up clothing wise to make for a comfortable trip. I rely on moisture wicking shirts as my under layers and a nice camo beanie to do the trick! That’s perfect for fishing.

With the cold water, finesse tactics have reined supreme and smallmouth have been the main focus, get them around a little current and they don’t seem to mind the cold so much as them silly lake largemouth, although they can still be caught, check out my buddy Josh’s latest hunting expedition .

A 3″ tube has been my go to bait in year’s past, but maybe the fish are on to me, because this year a flick shake type wacky worm a Zappu Inchi Wacky head (pictured above) has been deadly and if they are hugging the bottom a little tighter to the bottom, a 3.5″ Smallie Beaver on a 3/16oz Picasso shakey head has been doing the job.

Josh also joined me on one of the smallie trips where we wrecked them pretty good, you can scroll down on his blog to see more pics!

Until next time….
