It’s Classic Week!

Bassmaster Classic

Well the pros are finishing up with their final official practice today, tomorrow is a preparation and media day, then they take to the water on Friday to chase that $500,000 prize.  Conditions are  bitterly cold, they are having record cold temps around Alabama for several weeks now.  It could be a very challenging tournament, but I still think a couple anglers will still really catch them well.  One thing, if the fish are still hanging in a winter pattern, they are usually grouped up.

Here is some fun stuff to prepare you for Bassmaster Classic week.

There are some good tips on fishing milfoil here, plus those of you that fish Minnetonka a lot will really enjoy this.  It is broken into 3 parts.

Kentucky Lake Fantasy Fishing Group Winner!

Congratulations to Jason Mayer from IN, he was the highest scoring member of my Bassin’ Blog group for ESPN Fantasy Fishing at the Kentucky Lake event.  He is our first threepeat winner on the Bass side!!!  Somebody needs to start winning prizes other then Jason & Brad.

Jason said it was the same line-up he used for the past two tourneys, but he would be changing it up for this Mississippi river tournament.

For Jason’s efforts, he has won a bag of Tru-Tungsten finesse worms, should be great for catching those tough Indiana bass!!

Thanks to Tru-Tungsten for helping out with the prizes.

Tru-Tungsten - Discover the Feel!

Its not too late to join my group, prizes will be awarded at every tournament and year end.

Setting an ESPN Fantasy Fishing Line-up for Kentucky Lake

Kentucky Lake is one of the great bass fisheries in this country.  This time of year, fish should be really starting to stack up on ledges.  Sounds like water levels have dropped, so flipping bushes probably won’t play much, but you never know.

By the way, you need to get it in by tomorrow 8am central, this tournament actually starts on a Wednesday and ends on Saturday to allow travel time to Iowa next week.

The next 3 events Kentucky Lake, Mississippi River, & Lake Oneida are all vastly different fisheries, so trying to set your lineup to fit all 3 may be a bit of a challenge.

Here are a few guys that I think would be solid fantasy fishing picks that are not on my team.  Kelly Jordan, Kevin Wirth, Edwin Evers & Timmy Horton.  The breakdown on my team is as follows:
KVD – With a 3rd & a 1st last two June events on KY Lake, he is a lock.
Matt Herren – For the money probably on my roster until the bitter end, should have a solid finish, hopefully he does not get caught chasing shallow fish and misses the ledge bite.
Skeet Reese – To good to cut loose, should catch plenty of bass slinging Lucky Crafts on Ledges
Alton Jones– Hot hand & should have solid finishes all 3 events.
Jami Fralick– Hopefully Jami can repeat last summer’s Kentucky success both on Elite Series and Open tourney, I am hoping he can produce on the Mississippi river as well, but he is for sure gone before Oneida.

So here are my Guntersville picks, just one change from Smith Mountain:

Raining 4 pounders!

The short term forecast for Gadsden, AL is continued downpour of 4lb and bigger bass.  To put it simply, the fishing is out of this world right now at Lake Guntersville.  The weights are unbelievable!!  The top 50 cut sits at 20lbs – 11oz; 20lbs even puts you in 64th place out of 99 anglers.  Todd Faircloth leads with 31lbs and the 12 cut after day 1 is currently held by Rick Clunn with 25-14.

null
How Jacked my the Stone Pony be to have weighed 27lbs! – Photo of Courtesy ESPNOutdoors.com

Sounds like most guys are working a shallow shad spawn bite early and following the fish back out a bit as the day wears on.  But guys are reporting catching them about any way they want to.  Faircloth reports catching most of his 31lbs by 8am and throwing back 20lb limits in the afternoon.  Aaron Marten’s Marshall reports him catching 130 fish, many other anglers talk about sorting through any where between 60 – 200 bass during the day.

Sound like fishing has slowed some today, but i have heard reports that KVD has over 23lbs, A-mart 25lbs, Velvick 27lbs, Faircloth 20lbs as of this entry.

So my final question, how did 3 guys not weigh limits when other guys are calling catching 4 pound fish Stupid Easy???

Pool 2 early practice results

Well let’s get right to the point!

Yep, no fish…..  I did have two very good bites on a tube, they were either both pike or I had bad spots in my line on both hooksets, tough to say.  I may have had a couple bites on a Rapala Fat 3 and a SWL Quickstrike spinnerbait, but tough to say.  I spent most of the day alternating between a tube & a white swim jig.  I also threw crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbait and jigs.  Kind of amased I could not get bit on reaction baits with water in the main channel at 54 degrees.

To add insult to injury, I snapped my transducer off my trolling motor and my FLW fantasy did not fall in the right order, so no big prizes this week.

I am hoping to get back out on Pool 2 this Saturday.  Congrats to KVD for being a stud and winning on an unlikely body of water (Smith Mtn) for him and Stetson Blaylock had a great win on Lake Norman, former co-angler phenom, now FLW tour pro winner!  Too bad Mr. Moynagh could not make surge today and get a big win.

Also look for announcements on group winners for my Fantasy Fishing leagues, I have got some new prizes this week!
