Couple of Important Late Season Tournaments

You may not have realized, but there are two very important pro level tournaments in-progress this week.

#1 – BASS Wildcard Tournament – Harris Chain – This tournament will fill out the remaining 10 anglers to fish the 2007 Elite Series.  There are quite a few pros who did not automatically requalify from last year, fishing this tournament.  Day 1 leader is Bryan Hudgins from Orange Park, FL.  Should be exciting to see how this unfolds in the next two days.

#2 – Final 2006 FLW Series tournament on Smith Lake in AL.  Anglers here are trying to stay or move into the Top 30 in the points race, as this is the final stop to qualify for 2007 Forrest Wood Cup.

I will try to do a summary of these events that wrap up this weekend!

Get to Know’em – Derek Remitz

In case you had not heard, North Branch, MN native Derek Remitz has qualified for the upcoming Bassmasters Classic on Lay Lake in February.  He did this by finishing first in the points for BASS Northern Tour, he also fished the Southern Tour and finished a respectable 12th.  His top honors in the points also grants him a tour card to fish the Bassmasters Elite Series for the 2007 season, which he intends to do.  He lives in Hemphill, TX during spring and winter so that he can fish more, but does reside in MN when he is not fishing.

Also, it is very noteworthy that he finished 8th in points in the Stren Series Central Division this year.  In previous years he has fished a non-boater in BASS tour events and as a boater in BASS Weekend Series, BFL’s and TTT tournaments.  His accomplishments this year are most noteworthy of any MN born angler since Jim Moynagh.

Humorous Bass Fishing Video

I found this great clip of the ‘Overly Serious Bass Fisherman’ on YouTube.  I could only get it to post on my other Blog, so jump over and check it out – http://basstournament.blogspot.com/2006/11/what-you-always-wanted-to-do-but-were.html

This guy does what you have always wanted & thought about doing but never had the guts to do….. He trespasses on a corporate pond at a Verizon facility in TX and slays the Bass.  Can you imagine doing this over at the Carlson Towers?

Maybe some of you have a local pond that you have snuck into, maybe tell us about it…..

Record Monster Smallie caught in Idaho

The crazy thing about this fish is that this guy shattered his own state record on the same lake he caught the previous record.  He caught this monster 9lb-11.52oz on a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver.  Wow what a fish!

Gift Guide for a Bass Fishing Rube!

Hey All:
This entry has a two-fold purpose.  Its a wish list for myself as my birthday and christmas is right around the corner and at the same time its serves as good reference for anyone shopping for the sportsman in their life.

#1. Good RainGear – I would like to get this  in the Jacket and Bib, I found out the hard way down at Patoka that my raingear had outlived is usefulness.

Bass Pro Shops XPS Gore-Tex Extreme Rainwear Jacket for Men

#2. Buy this ProductShimano Symetre 2500 Front Drag This is a necessity if you are planning to start dabbling with Flourocarbon lines.  2000 size and smaller reels, just cause problems with flourocarbon.

#3. Buy this ProductShimano Castaic SF, in my opinion this is the finest pitchin’ & flippin’ reel made and I don’t believe they make it anymore, I would like to get a couple more while they are still available.

#4. Buy this ProductReel Grip Handle Grips – these are a great little perk for someone who already has a ton of fishing stuff.  Makes the real grips a little more comfortable and easier to grip when wet.  Great stocking stuffer for a few reals.  They come in a ton of color schemes, from Camo, blue, red and even Pink!!

#5. Buy this ProductXTools Grip N Weigh Electronic Scale – as far as I can tell, this is the best bargain for scales.  Very durable, waterproof and it even floats.   I am in serious need of a good scale……

#6.Buy this ProductGambler Cane Toad – these are great little lures and must for any serious anglers tackle box.  I think the Cane Toad is the best of the best when it comes to swimming toads.  Better than the Zoom Ultravibe Horny Toad, Stanley Ribbit Frog, Yum Buzz Frog and all the rest.

#7. Bass Pro Shops Lure Wraps – great necessity for any time you have a lure with treble hooks tied on.  Protects against tangles, snags in your carpet and especially your seats.  In the long run, it’s a time saver and a safety thing.  If you are a non-boater, this will save you from being the guy who snags a seat in your boater’s brand new bass boat

#8. Gift Cards to a local sporting goods store or one of the great online store likes LandBigFish.com  or Basspro.com.  They can always find something they need with a nice Gift Card.  They will appreciate a gift card over something they do not need.

#9.  Under Amor Cold Gear – This would be great for those early spring and late fall outings, some matching leggings would be beneficial as well.  XL tops and L bottoms.

Under Armour ColdGear Mock Turtleneck for Men

Under Armour: The Advantage is Undeniable.? ,,For every kind of weather, and in every environment, Under Armour apparel delivers maximum comfort! ,,,, ColdGear?: for when it’s cold. Your first and most important line of defense against the cold — just because you have to hunt in the cold doesn’t mean you have to hunt cold. ColdGear is ideal as a cold weather base layer for warmth without bulk. Made from a double-sided fabric that wicks moisture from the skin and circulates body heat, it’s perfect for the working-and-waiting transitions the outdoorsman faces. Built in a compression fit to keep you warm and dry without weighing you down. Machine wash. Imported. Under Armour? ColdGear? Leggings sold separately and can be found through item search at item number 38-794-391-02

#10. Buy this ProductPower Pro Braided Line – it seems as though they have come with a new ‘Phantom Red’ product.  I would really like to try this line in some 40#, 50# & 65#.  I am a big fan of Cajun Red Lightning Line, so this is a logical step for me.

I may add to this list, so check back.  Also I’ll add a few other small items here on the bottom.
Sudoko Puzzle Book – Travel a lot and its a good distraction on the plane or in the passenger seat.
Minnesota Vikings Visor – I need a good Vikings Visor to sport on Sundays
Bass Fishing DVD’s – always a good bet

Handy Tool for the Tournament Angler

streamlight
How many of you have struggled trying to retie after dark before a big bass tournament?  Or wandered aimlessly out in the darkness to a tree stand in the middle of the woods?  The solution to this problem is a good LED Headlamp that either straps around your head or clips to your hat or visor brim.  This is also a great tool for once you have bagged that big buck and you need to field dress it  after sunset!!

You can find these at some sporting good store, otherwise I found a great online source for these LED Head Lights and LED Flashlights!   Streamlights are superior to regular flash lights for brightness and reliability in the field.  The beam of the light is more concentrated with LED as well, this helps to put the light on the project at hand, plus they almost never need new batteries.

It is a great stocking stuffer for anyone who hunts or fishes.  It’s also a great gift idea for someone to keep an emergency flash light in the car or to keep around as a last minute gift exchange at work or a Christmas party.

Hope this helps next time you are up late retying for the big tournament or field dressing a Boone & Boone Crocket Trophy.

Getting Back in the Flow

Hey All,

Posts have been a little less frequent then you were accustomed to this past 9-10 months.  Part of that has been a hectic fishing and work schedule, the other part is being a little bummed about Patoka and hard to get excited with ice just around the corner.

I plan to prepare a holiday shopping gift list for true Bass Fishing Rube like myself.  I figure it will be a good reference for those of you trying to make a list and for those out there trying to find ideas for their “hard to shop for” Sports man or woman.  Also its time to start looking towards some big national tournaments coming up, I plan to watch those a little closer and Blog about them.

In the mean time, check out my newly added ‘SHOP’ page on my main site.  I have created a list of great places to shop for outdoor gear.  Just click on those banners when you are shopping online, my website gets a small commission and you get the same great prices.  It costs you nothing and it helps offset the cost of my website and blog that some of you say you enjoy so much, so please help me out a bit there.  Also, my forum is a great place to loiter during the workday

Stay Tuned,

Bassmasters Weekend Series Northern Regional – Oct 26-28, 2006

I started the tournament in the bottom of Fleming Creek through the bridge.  I worked the area over with white spinnerbait, black buzzbait, crankbait and Zoom Speed Craw on a Tungsten texas rig.  No bites, I did notice that the water was a couple degrees cooler then on the other side of the bridge, I think that was a bad sign.  We worked back out on the lake side and onto a week flat, the area looked good but several boats had been through there.

We than ran up to the dam where I started cranking a deep weed point with a Spatter Back Lucky Craft Flat Mini DR Crankbait, it was not long before I caught a 12″ bass and my partner spooked some shad with his spinnerbait on the other side of the point, I threw back in there and caught a 14″ bass.  We worked this area for several hours and all at once I caught a fish that was right at 15″ and one over 17″ on the crankbait.  I ended up letting the one go, because I thought he may be short.  Hopped around the rest of they day, caught a 13″ bass on my Secret Weapon Lure Spinnerbait near the weigh-in.  After day 1, I was in 40th place with 1 fish for 2lbs-13oz, if I had weighed that other fish, I would have been right on the cut bubble with just under 5lbs.  Overall it was my best day on the water with 2 keepers and 4 short fish.

Day 2, I started near the dam where I caught two keepers and two shorts the day before.  We worked it with all kinds of lures and I only got one really short fish.  We hopped around the rest of the day, running areas that I thought had good potential and new banks throwing swim jigs, cranks, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and never got another fish.  Tough, tough day for our boat.  Not weighing a fish dropped me to 64th, the fish that I almost weigh became irrelevant.  I was very disappointed in my performance.

I never really found the fish in 3 days of practice, I largely attribute that to being very unprepared for the tournament.  I did not do nearly enough map study and preparation before we got there.  I also believe I had the wrong mind set going in when it came to seasonal patterns, I think I was trying to find a later fall pattern then what most of the quality fish were in.  It was good for me to get knocked around by this lake, it will help me to focus and prepare better in the future.  Congrats to the 5 guys from MN that are going to Nationals at Lake Guntersville: Bradley Leifermann, Dean Capra, Thomas Borkowski, John Schlee & Brian Brown!

Preview – Bassmasters Weekend Series Regional – Patoka Reservoir

I fished Patoka for 3 full days of practice, plus 1.5 hours one morning and another hour 1 evening.  In total, I caught 2 keepers and 4 short bass.  My two keepers both came of rip rap banks with weeds.  One on a white Secret Weapon Spinnerbait and one on a Buy this ProductLucky Craft Flat Mini DR Crankbait in a Spatter Back pattern

I tried a bunch of different things and did not find much to go on.  I fished deep weeds, channel drops, channel banks, bluff walls, wood, backs of coves, the list goes on.  My plan for day 1 of the tournament was to hit all the areas that were similar to the ones where I caught my two keepers.  I figured two keepers a day would be pretty good in this tournament.  I felt pretty confident if I grinded it out in these areas I could get the bites I needed.

At the meeting I got boat number 130 out of 134, which was fine because I really did not have any really good area to start on anyways.  Its been awhile since I fished a tournament that I had practiced for and had so little to go on.

Practice Days 1 & 2 – Bassmasters Weekend Series Regional – Patoka Lake, IN – Oct 21-22, 2006

Working remotely today and had a chance to put together a quick update.  Fishing has been brutally tough.  Fished a fairly full day on Saturday and a long day on Sunday and managed to boat one keeper bass on a SWL Spinnerbait.  Also had one fish that would have been close to a keeper up to the boat on a drop shot.  Any my practice partners have only managed to get one very short fish up to the boat.

We have tried a bunch of different locations, types of structure and baits.  1ft – 19ft in depths, fished bluffs, bridges, grass clumps, weedlines, timber, channel banks, creek ledges and combinations of the for mentioned.  Baits that we have tried, drop shots, spinnerbaits, shakey heads, jig worms, texas rig, jigs, topwater, crankbaits, carolina rig and the list goes on.  We had a severe drop in temperature, with lows in the 30’s and day time highs are about 20F lower than average.  Fishing has been tough on the local tournaments as well.  Two tournaments that I was aware of, 75 total teams for two days, only 6 limits :0

I hope to get out for about an hour this evening after my last phone call for work, temps have stabilized and it will slowly get warmer through the rest of the week, its not going to get warm, but at least the weather has stabilized.  I got one full day of practice to put together my game plan.  On a positive note, I think I have located some good areas and see a lot of the lake, so if I find a pattern, I think I will be able to duplicate it and run it during the tournament.
