Top 5 Patterns & Baits at Beaver Lake

Unlike years past, sight fishing was never a role in this tournament.  It was more of pre-spawn bite and it was finesse vs. power patterns.  In the end finesse won out.

1st – Shinichi Fukae – Fished a 4″ Gary Yamamoto Shad-Shaped Worm & a 5″ Gary Yamamoto Kut Tail Worm (green-pumpkin or cinnamon) in standing timber. He spent all 4 days in the same area on the lower end of the lake, maneuvering his boat among the timber and working his worm through water that was 10 to 15 feet deep over a pea-gravel bottom. He caught no fewer than 13 keepers a day. He weighed in a mixed bag each day – two largemouths, two smallmouths and a spotted bass on day 1, and a largemouth, a smallmouth and three spots on days 2, 3 and 4.

2nd – Mark Rose – Focused on large smallmouths as he fished a 4″ Strike King finesse Worm, (green pumpkin) primarily on points. “They seemed to be on both sides of the points, right where the flat part dropped off into steeper walls,” he said. “Just being persistent was the key. The smallmouth and the spots would hit in little feeding frenzies, and sometimes you’d make a pass and they weren’t biting. But they were still there.”

3rd – Craig Powers – Fished staging fish that were on the brink of moving up to spawn by “waking” a bone colored Bomber Long A.  He fished this lure all tournament & his pattern dwindled with the wind and bad weather on days 3 & 4.

4th – Jeffrey Thomas – Target Largemouths by focusing on ditches that adjoined spawning flats, and ambushed some good-sized females en route to the reproduction grounds. He had good success flipping a Rattleback Jig & Power Craw (green pumpkin) around docks and large brushpiles the first 2 days, but that bite went away on day 3.  He caught all six of his weigh-in fish over the final 2 days on crankbaits. He used two different shad colored lipless models (Cordell Spot & Custom Lures Unlimited) and a phantom red Storm Wiggle Wart.

5th – Darrel Robertson – Achieved his third Top 10 in eight tries at Beaver by catching a mix of largemouths and spots.  “My philosophy at Beaver is to fish for 10 pounds, and that means you’re not fishing for Kentuckys,” he said. “Except for very seldom, you have to have a combination to get that weight.”  He caught the vast majority of his fish on a Zoom Fluke (white & watermelon). He also threw a spinnerbait, a jerkbait and a Storm Wiggle Wart.

It was obvious that were many different things working on Beaver.  The power techniques dominated the first two days, but it was the finesse pattern that outlasted everyone for the win.

More Chatterbait Options….

Looks like Rad Lures’ competition gets stiffer day by day.  Venom Lures now has a new Chatterbait style lure called the Venom Rattle Shake.   If I order some of these, maybe I will get them before MN Bass Opener……
It seems pretty similar to the Rad Lures Chatterbait and the Fishin Magician Voo-Doo.  I have no idea which is better, or if there is any difference between any of them.  If they all do work, its good, because there is such a demand for them, they are almost impossible to get.  I would welcome any info anyone had on any of these baits and the successes or non-success that they have had.

Waking Up to a New Technique

“Wake Baits” were making some waves at Beaver Lake.  Wake baits are essentially floating jerkbaits reeled very slowly on the surface to create a wake. Several pros tapped into technique last week, including Craig Powers of Rockwood, Tenn., who has been nominated by his peers as the undisputed king of wake-baiting on the FLW Tour.

Powers finished third in the Wal-Mart Open by waking Bomber Long A’s (15A) along Beaver Lake’s surface to bring curious spotted and largemouth bass up for an investigatory chomp.

Powers said. “It’s basically a topwater technique but instead of using a walker or popper, I use a Long A and reel it as slow as possible so it bulges the surface and creates a wake. At certain times it will out fish other topwaters 10 to 1 and last week at Beaver was one of those times.”

Other pros employing the technique successfully at the Wal-Mart Open included Koby Kreiger (8th), Shad Schenck (12th) and Wesley Strader (22nd). In fact, Strader used the exact same technique to finish 4th at the Lake Lanier Series in March.

Powers uses a standard floating Bomber Long A for the unique technique. He throws it on a 7-foot medium-light spinning rod spooled with 10-pound test monofilament, noting that the density of fluorocarbon is too heavy, which hinders the action of the bait.

In terms of color, Powers prefers a plain white or bone colored Long A . He’ll even take stock factory colors and scrape the paint off them to reveal more white.

“The windows for catching them good are very small and fragile because so many conditions have to come together to make it right and rarely do all those conditions stay pinned together for that long before something changes. But when it gets right, the number of fish you can catch on it is stupid.

These seems like a great technique, I have heard of guys doing something similar for smallmouths with Rapala Original Floating Minnows .  I am guessing you need relatively calm water, but they seem to be pretty mum on the ideal conditions.  Maybe this will be the new Chatterbait….

Wrapped Boats – Great Concept!

When BASS forced its Elite Series contenders to wrap their boats & trucks, it was probably one of the best things that could have happened to tournament bass fishing.  I am sure this idea, spawned from the sponsor wrapped Rangers that the FLW uses in the final 2 cut days at their tournaments.  Why shouldn’t every Pro Angler brand themselves and their sponsors, similar to Nascar?  Click on the following link to see all the wrapped boats from this year’s Bassmaster Elite Series competitors.
Wrapped Boats

I am sure most Nascar Fans follow their guys by both major sponsor and car number.  Soon Bass Angling Fans will know that Skeet Reese runs the Lucky Craft boat and Brent Chapman runs the GE boat, etc.  You also see many anglers picking numbers to put on their boats as well.

This is a great vehicle to increase the amount of non-endemic sponsors and dollars participating in bass fishing.  There is a lot of billboard space on a truck & boat traveling across the country as well as getting on TV during tournaments.

I think my favorite wraps are Randy Howell, Stephen Browning, Ish Monroe & Mike Reynolds.  Who are your favorites?

Shinichi Fukae cashes in again…

Another win for Shin!  Fukae joins an elite group when it comes to the FLW Tour.  He is only the 3rd angler in this tour’s short history to win mulitple events in a single season.  Rick Clunn won two events in 2000 and David Fritts won an amazing three events in 1997.

Shin won the season opener on the “Big O”, so that is a whopping $300,000 in those two wins and a total of $303,000 in the season’s first 4 events.  Shinichi changed nothing about his bait presentation most of the week, saying he elected to stay with a 4-inch, green-pumpkin Gary Yamamoto worm with a light, 3/32-ounce jig head on 8-pound-test line.

New Lineup on Bass Saturday – ESPN2

You may have noticed a couple new shows this morning on the Saturday morning lineup.  Bass Insider and A Day on the Lake.  I only saw a few minutes of Bass Insider, but it looked pretty solid.  I guess we will see what the upcoming episodes in the coming weeks.

The more exciting new show is “A Day on the Lake”.  This is a spin off of one of my favorite sections in Bassmaster magazine.  The basic premise, a BASS Tour Pro tackles a lake that they have never been on and have a limited time to figure it out and catch some fish.  This is often the situation, that you and I face every weekend when we check out a new lake.  This could easily climb its way on to my Top 10 favorites show list.  I believe there is a a ton to be learned from watching these pros when they are put into these situations.  So tune in and tune up your game!

I thought this day would never come….

Sure its important to note that Craig Powers is leading the FLW Tour at Beaver Lake, but the real news in my world is that Lake Marion, my home lake, is completely ice free as of 8:33am this morning!

Craig seems to have made his way to the top of the leaderboard by fishing his jerkbait around anything that looked bassy to him.  See rest of the Top 10.  Way to go Cliff Pirch, who vaulted into the 9th position from 105th.

Busch Shootout Update

Since Day 1 at Beaver Lake was kind of a snoozer, no huge bags and not many stars at the top, I thought we could look at the Busch Shootout ContendersJeffrey Thomas leads at Beaver with 16.5lbs., after reading his story, I do not like his chances to hold on.  In Beaver Lake’s defense, its hard to compare to Amistad, Santee Cooper, Lake Murray and the rest of the hawg fests we have had in the last few months.  It is going to take more than a few meanmouth bass to raise eyebrows this year

Place Name                      Body Of Water               Day lbs-Ozs
————————————————————————

1 Preston Clark             Santee Cooper Reservoir,      1   39-06
2 Ishama Monroe             Lake Amistad, Texas           3   34-01
3 Aaron Martens             Santee Cooper Reservoir,      4   32-10
4 Mike Wurm                 Santee Cooper Reservoir,      3   32-04
5 Kevin Wirth               Santee Cooper Reservoir,      2   31-15
6 Jimmy Mize                Lake Amistad, Texas           2   31-14
7 Ken Cook                  Lake Amistad, Texas           1   31-10
8 Fred Roumbanis            Lake Amistad, Texas           4   28-01
9 Greg Hackney              Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas       1   22-02
10 Mark Tyler                Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas       3   21-13
11 Greg Hackney              Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas       4   20-08
12 Takahiro Omori            Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas       2   20-06

I think the guys in 8th place and up are pretty safe bet to plan their fall around the shootout dates, where they will fish for a $100,000.  Its also important to note the Preston Clark has already secured a spot with his first day limit at the Classic at Toho.  I am not sure how that is handled, but I am guessing that will leave another spot for the guy that finished in 13th.  I am guessing 9-12th places will be displaced by the Guntersville & Clark Hills Elite Series stops.

Should be fun to follow throughout the rest of the year,

Who’s Eager for Beaver?

You know all the major bass fishing tours are in full swing when the FLW visits Beaver Lake.  It has become a tradition for the FLW Tour to visit this White River reservoir near Wal-Mart’s home in Bentonville, AR.

I have been blogging a ton about BASS, so I thought it was time to give the FLW some love.  They had a great tournament at Lake Murray.  So lets preview Beaver Lake.

For a preview of patterns, check out BassFan.com.  If you were like me and had Andre Moore pegged as your fantasy anchor, you may be in trouble.  It does not sound like it will be a sight fishing pattern this weekend.  This is an interesting tournament, usually everyone catches 6-8 lbs of spotted bass and its the guys who can add a few nice largemouth or bronzebacks to their bags and get into the 10lb range, will end up making the cut.

This tournament will probably be about schooling fish and Shakey Heads .

ICE REPORT: Lake Marion in Lakeville, MN is about 15% open water as of this morning,

It’s a Wrap – Santee & Mike Reynolds Boat

The most recent stop on the Bassmasters Elite Series goes down in the record books and Preston Clark lays claim to the all-time 4 day total for a BASS event, 105-15.  Sounds like he casught almost all his fish on a pumpkinseed Zoom Critter CrawThat is just plain awesome.  BassFan.com tells us how he did it.  Hopefully it does not get broke at Guntersville at the end of the month.  If not, its probably safe until next spring when the Elite Series swings through these lakes again…

Speaking of wraps….  If you have not had a chance to see Mike Reynolds uniquely wrapped boat yet, here it is.

Mike was not able to land any large sponsorship dollars for his wrap, so he thought he would do something unique.  He used his own money to pay tribute to our armed forces.  He has the seals for the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines displayed behind the text “THESE COLORS DON’T RUN!”  Pretty sweet deal and I think this is really cool.  Well done Mike!  When I was down at Amistad in Del Rio where there is an Air Force base, he was a fan favorite and I am sure this will continue on every stop on the Elite Series.  Mike’s most notable moment before this wrap was his win last year at Clark Hills Reservoir.

Way to go Mike,
