Mediocre BFL Debut

For a few reasons, I had long wanted to fish some BFL events, they are well attended and often fish the Mississippi River that I very much like to fish and have had a fair amount of success on.  I have yet to have the time to fish a full BFL Great Lakes season and for the past 5-6 years the event in Wabasha always conflicted with a tournament next to my home that I have a hard time not fishing.

Well the stars aligned this year and the BFL slipped back one weekend and I had an open weekend to fish the event out of Alma.  Although I did not have the amount of practice I’d of liked to have, though I would go for it anyways.  I was able to fish the Sunday before the event and the day before on Friday.  The water fell over a foot between Sunday and Friday, so that made much of my Sunday practice irrelevant.

Friday practice was mixed results, I actually got plenty of bites, while pulling on most, the few that I hooked did not show promise of the 3lb plus class fish that would be needed for this event.  Most of my success was coming flipping current banks with a Okeechobee Craw Pit Boss on a 1/2oz weight.  I tried plenty of grass but never seem to find the right stretches.  I did have one main river rock area where I got a couple of quality smallmouth bites, including the 19″ fish on an A-rig.

19″ – 4lb Smallmouth on A-rig w/ Keitech Fat ImpactsDobyns 795ML Swimbait Rod

After practice, my hopes were not super high, my game plan was to work through the water I had on Pool 4 and get a decent limit and then hope by fishing harder it would produce 1 or 2 big bites or at some point just go fishing.  The fact that the WI DNR made this tournament a 3-fish limit helped the luck factor, as a single 4lb bite would got a long ways.

I drew boat 59, and my co-angler seemed like a pretty good guy.  I started on a small grass/gravel point, it only produced on small 14″ largemouth on a Yellow Magic popper.  My co-angler did get a nice largemouth on a frog as we fish down the grass a bit farther, we got several bites in the area, but I think many were pike.  I then whipped into an area up river that seemed to look right.  I missed a couple smallmouth there, but they were probably just keepers.  The next area, was where I had gotten some bigger smallmouth in practice, current was super strong in this area.  My partner got a smallmouth close to 3lbs on a jig and I caught a 2lb smallmouth on an A-rig.  We made several more passes here with no more fish.

I then went and fished several areas in Indian Slough, I was able to get my 3rd fish and upgrade a couple times flipping a Pit Boss on banks with wood, rock & grass.  My partner also got a squeaker largie on a beaver to fill his limit.  He also missed a few nice bites on a frog.

We then returned to my rock area, we each got a smallmouth that culled for us, but then again no more bites.  I then hit some more flipping water on the MN side and culled on more fish flipping.  Time was running out, we hit a few things on the way back to Alma, but no more upgrades.

I ended up 62 out of 100 with 3 fish for 7lb 3oz, my partner who had fewer bites had slightly better quality and got 18th and a small check on the co-angler side.  Not sure I could have done much different in the tournament, other then I should have probably covered more water and found better areas in practice.

Onward and upward to the next tournament, can’t win them all.  On another note, I am glad I fished this BFL, as I was very impressed with how they ran their tournaments!

First win of 2012

Saturday I fished the Pan-O-Prog bass tournament, hosted by Gopher Bassmasters, with my good buddy Ryan Brant.  I’ve fished this tournament every year since I moved to Lakeville in 2003, all but first with Ryan, and we cashed checks every single time, but could never get the W.  We came close on many occasions and in fact had the fished hooked to win a couple times.  Case in point last year, we had three 4lb class fish hooked only to see them jump and spit our baits, sickening!

I only spent a few hours looking at the lake on two different mornings the week of the tournament for practice.  Lake Marion is not a big lake, so I feel like I just need to locate a few fish to start on and get a feel for what the fish are doing each year.  The Saturday before the event, the first spot I checked, I caught a 3.5lbr and my buddy Bill got 2 keepers on our first 3 casts.  As tough as Marion has been lately, I knew this would be our starting deal if we could get a good draw & be first boat there.

I was fortunate enough to draw boat #7 and we were able to get to our desired area first.  It was not lights out when we got there, it took awhile to get bit and a few casts more before Ryan got our first keeper in the boat on a flick shake.  Ryan was able to get another keeper before we doubled up and that gave us 4 fish, with three of them being pretty small.  Finally Ryan got a 3lb fish hooked up and in to the net, things were looking up.

It slowed up a little, so we made a little larger loop in the area, often resting a spot makes it better, I got a 12″ squeaker on a BassTEK Tungsten Jig and then Ryan had a nice bass nip his swim jig, I followed up in that spot with a Baby Brush Hog and put a nice 2lb fish in the boat.  We then shifted back to the primary area and I quickly stuck a big fish on the hog, it jumped several times but we got her in the nest, she ended up being 4.62lbs.  I then followed that fish up with 2 more 3lb class fish.  Our bag was really taking shape as of about 8:30am.

Winning Combo: Baby Brush Hog fished on Dobyns DX744

The primary area slowed for larger fish, so we made another wider loop and I got one more 3lb fish, leaving us with a single 2lb fish as the small fish in our bag.  We tried to get one more from this spot, so from there we ran knew water and Ryan tagged another fish close to 4lbs around 11am.  We worked hard to try to upgrade from there, but only small fish from that point on.

We ended up winning with 6 fish for just under 20.9lbs and my 4.62lb fish missed big fish honors by .06.  We fished a really clean tournament and often that is the key to winning a tournament, you need to be clean have a few things go your way.  Full results should be posted here soon.

Sunday I practiced for the Alma BFL, as I hope to keep this momentum rolling!

NABC #2 – On the Chin

Last weekend Josh Douglas & I fished the second event in the North American Bass Circuit series on the Madison Chain.  We both towed our boats across Wisconsin on Thursday and practiced separate halves of the chain.  I felt like I spent more time eliminating water then anything, but thankfully Josh was developing a solid flipping pattern on Monona.

I only caught one keeper in practice, saw a few more and pulled on some better bites, but Josh was pulling on tons of bites and getting quality when he did lean back on one.  Check his report for the details.

We got to our best stretch and had it to ourselves, less wind and sun then in practice, but we gave it a go and got a few bites.  The bites were fairly steady throughout the day, but they never materialized into fish in the box.  Most results in torn baits with missing appendages or short fish.  It was honestly baffling to have less then a 10% hook up rate even letting the fish swim off with  your bait.

We only managed 3 fish for 7lbs and change, in retrospect, we probably should have tried finessing them off the edges, but the practice was so strong just the afternoon before and the bites were still there.  The only way to really deal with these two sub-par tourneys is to take a lesson and move on.

So this weekend, bring on the Pan-O-Prog bass tournament on Lake Marion, aiming to make this my slump buster!  Since I do not have anything pic worthy from Madison Chain, we will end with a pic of nice 3.5lb bass I got in practice from Lake Marion for the Prog.

Still 2 days to enter Evolve Bait Contest

NABC Lake Winnebago Recap

Fishing the North American Bass Circuit with good buddy Josh Douglas came with much excitement and mutual high expectations for results.  We were able to put some practice time in on the lake the previous weekend and the Friday before the tournament.

We found some things we really liked in our practice, but the main issue was how obvious these spots were and we had high certainty of plenty of company come tournament day.  The primary pattern we found fish in was shallow largemouth that trying to spawn or just barely on the front or backside of their annual ritual.  Our practice was pretty consistent, finding a few good fish here and there until late on Friday afternoon before tournament registration.  We found a small little boat canal all by itself that was stuffed with bass.  Josh and I both agreed it was one of the craziest things either of us had seen.  This small shallow canal, was just loaded with bass, big bass, bluegills, slab crappies, gar, in fact it looked better then most Bass Pro or Cabela’s aquariums.

After a long debate, we both agreed to roll the dice and put are eggs in the basket where we saw the huge load of fish.  We drew boat #23 out of 42, we came around the corner and thought we were first boat into this small area.  Although, there was a fishing boat catching bluegils just inside the front entrance, it also seemed water had gotten a little dirtier in this area.  We kindly asked to pass them and we got in position to start fishing slowly into this area.  As we started making our firsts casts we saw a tournament boat towards the back, obviously they ran past the front entrance and started in the back.  Fairly quickly, both Josh & I got a short and then Josh put a nice 2.7lb largemouth in the box on a Havoc Pit Boss.  Starting to feel good, another local bass boat emerged from way back fishing towards us.

Long story short, we tried to make this area work and blind fish it slowly, but dirty water, boat traffic and home owners fishing from their docks got the best of us; three hours into the tournament we still had just the one keeper.  We bailed from the area and went to fish similar structure that was also sure to be community stuff.  I quickly put a small keeper in the boat on a wacky rig (sign that things are not going well, when I am throwing a wacky rig).  We were about to get to a back area to try to catch some bedders only to find another boat leaving from there.  We continued to work these areas and tried to catch two bedders of our own, only to still have two fish with about 2 hours to go.

When things were looking super grim, I caught two decent keepers on a baby brush hog on an inside weedline.  We tried to work that area and another area like it for that fifth fish, but were stuck on four with about 90 minutes left.  We decided to live or die in our starting area, hoping some of the afternoon sun pulled more fish back into the canal that was so loaded just 24 hours earlier.  We did manage one small male sight fishing to fill our limit and setup on a couple females that just would not commit before we had to weigh-in.

Still have to wear the Happy Face on a tough tournament day!

We weighed out disappointing limit for 11.88lbs, which out us in 32nd place.  Not the what we had envisioned for this tournament, but felt pretty good about avoiding a near disaster and preserving some decent points toward the championship.  On the long way home we mulled over our decisions and strategy, and formulated some plans for the Madison Chain.  We both agreed, you learn the most from events that  you struggle in.

Don’t forget to enter the May contest for a free $50 gift card to Sportsman’s Warehouse.

Mississippi River Pool 2 Warm Up Tournament

The title of this blog posts makes me chuckle a bit, because I fished this tournament as a fun tune-up for some other up coming events, but nothing about the day because of weather was warm what so ever.  It was 44 degrees, raining and a stiff east wind when the tournament started and it only got colder that day.

Even with the brutal conditions, it seemed there was a decent morning bite in the backwaters where we started.  I had a limit by shortly after 8am casting a Big Bite Baits tube to shallow wood, rocks & weeds.  I caught some small fish and some 16-17″ class fish early in the day on this pattern.  I stuck with it the rest of the day mixing in occasional reaction baits.  I did catch a few bass on a 1/2oz Ayu Biovex Stangun spinnerbait, one fish on a D-Bomb and a couple on a flipping jig, but I think all the fish weighed came on a tube.

Not much for pictures, because it was a paper/measure tournament. I did take one quick pic of my 18-5/8″ Largie!

My best 5 fish:
18-5/8″
17″
16.5″
16.5″
16.5″

That converted to 15.44lbs which was good enough for 4th place.  I fished pretty clean, just never made adjustments to get the bigger bites needed!  It was great just to get to put some of my newer Dobyns Rods to the test, they never disappoint! This weekend of to Lake Winnebago chain for some practice for an upcoming NABC tournament.

Watch for a contest announcement tomorrow!

Quest for a new Boat & My Fall Clearance Event

This past Saturday I fished the Simply Fishing Marine tournament with my buddy Paul Coffey on North & South Center.  Even though I had not been there in 10 years and Paul had never been there, I am pretty confident in my abilities to catch fish this time of year.  They put on a fun event and thought it was a good opportunity to put some more money in my boat fund.  Didn’t quite work out that way, we ended up with 16.5lbs and just missed money and win, just needed one more good cull.  I did get destroyed by a biggun on a dock late in the day, but that is fishing!

If you are wondering why I need to build up my boat fund, my boat had a terrible accident back in August, it was totaled, see blog post on that.

So I have decided to liquidate several rods, reel and all kind of tackle and gear to have a little more cash to put down on prospective boats.  So if you want to participate, check out my ebay page, got all kinds of good stuff and I will continue to keep putting up stuff for a couple weeks.

Currently, I have G-Loomis Rods, Shimano Reels, Lowrance GPS, Trokar Hooks, and more.  I have some Rapalas, Lucky Crafts, a Lunker Punker and a few other things ready to load tomorrow night as well.

If you don’t want to buy stuff, consider clicking on a few extra links/ads on my site or YouTube Channel

Gopher Fall Classic 2011

This past Sunday fished the Gopher Fall Classic, it has been a fun tournament the past few years.  It is a random draw team tourney.  It also is always close to home and mystery draw with no practice, usually makes for an exciting event.  Last year, my partner Dennis & I had a banner day weighing 6 fish for 29lbs.  Watch a quick video of our 29lb bag!

This year, I drew Paul Coffey, neither of us had been on this West Metro Lake before, but had heard a few good things, so we were excited.  We started the day by side scanning an area we thought looked right from map and looking at the shore.  We quickly found a patch of rocks.  After about 15 minutes, I loaded up on a nice 3.75lb fish on a Carolina Rigged Game Hawg.  We tried the spot a bit longer, but decided to head shallow.  With the lake not being huge, we wanted to the first to some of the shallow fish before others got the idea as well.

I doubled up on a good fish on the first dock but came unbuttoned.  We kept at it and it did not take long to fill our 6 fish limit with 2-3lb fish.  I was also fishing a buzzbait and a Phenix vibrating jig over the grass.  I picked up our 7th fish on the Phenix jig and it was easily over 4lbs.  We continued to hunt & peck along shallow cover, picking up a few upgrades here and there.  One of the last docks we hit, Paul nailed another 4lbr on a ring fry.

We then headed back to our deep spot, thinking the warming air and sun would position the fish out there.  Paul got a 3.5 & a 4.5lbr on a football jig to end our day.

Our total ended up being 23.98lbs for 6 fish and our big fish was only 4.49lbs, so we got to 24lbs the old fashion way, all 4lbrs.  We caught around 25 keepers for the day.  I hope to fish the Simply Fishing Marine tournament this Saturday as well.

Oh yeah, I think the Switch has Flipped!

MFBA TBF Minnesota State Championship – Mississippi River

This past weekend I fished the TBF Minnesota State Championship out of Wabasha, MN on the Mississippi River.  I only had one day to practice which was the Sunday before.  During practice, I found one good group of largemouth on Lake Pepin and a couple good groups of smallmouth down in the river on main channel rock and wing dams.

On day 1 of the tournament with the wind conditions I had committed to the lake, but made a couple wing dams spots on the way.  I caught small keeper smallmouth on a sand drop and had some short strikes on my favorite Yellow Magic popper.  Enough time wasted, I headed to the lake.  My first stop produced 2 short smallies on topwater.  I then headed to my largemouth area, I quickly got a chunky bass on a Red Eye Shad.  I then started working the area with my jig and got a fish close to 3lbs, then another good’un on Tube Craw and another on a Phenix vibrating jig.  I let that spot rest, got another keeper largie on a mojo rig and then came back to the best area and got another good fish on a chigger craw.  We worked our way back down the lake and my partner got his first fish on a lipless crank.

I then went back to where I had short strikes in the river and quickly caught 2 smallmouth around 3lbs on my Yellow Magic popper.  From there we fished a few wing dams and I spent a bit of time in Indian Slough trying to find a kicker, but it never happened.  I ended up with 3 largemouth and 2 smallies for 14.72lbs and my big fish was 3.59 largemouth.  That was good enough for 2nd after day 1.

The wind had switched a little on day 2 and I did not think my best Lake Pepin area would hold up, so I scratched that and went to an old favorite area below Wabasha.  My first spot only produced a single 2lb smallie and 2 white bass on the Yellow Magic.  From there, I knew things may be tougher and I was probably going to just do some fishing today.  My 3rd spot produced another keeper smallie on the topwater and largemouth on a Chigger Craw.  We tried a few wing dams as we worked our way up river, only one miss on the popper.  I got another keeper smallie on a mojo rig off the spot that produced the big smallies on day 1.  I then headed up by Reed’s Landing and got one short.  We stopped back through the previous spot and we each got a keeper smallmouth.  It felt good to have a limit, not big, but knew it would not take much more to make the top 6.  We worked through a series of wing dams and I got another decent smallmouth.

From there I decided to run back past Indian Slough and gamble a bit to find some frog fish.  I found some what appeared to be some good looking water.  My partner had a boil on his first cast, from there, I put on a big northern clinic on frogs   On the way back out of Indian Slough, we each flipped a nice largemouth and then we hit a little main river rock at the end and that was it.  The dock talk was mixed results, some anglers did better, others struggled.

I ended up weighing 10.19lbs and held on the 5th place, which is awesome, because the top 6 boaters qualify for the 2012 TBF Northern DIvisional in Wisconsin.  This was a nice redemption after not making the BFN Northern DIvisional on Whitefish.

This weekend, have the Gopher Fall Classic, possibly the Simply Fishing fall tournament the following weekend and I think some hawg hunting tomorrow night!

2011 MNBFN Tournament of Champions – Whitefish Chain

I was really looking forward to this year’s MN BASS Federation Nation tourney for a couple reasons.  One, I am always looking to do well in this tourney and move on to the Northern Divisionals.  Also, after the last 2 years where I had a monumental day 2 collapse on Pokegama and then Tweet Gate on Tonka last year, I had a major chip on my shoulder coming into this event.

I got a little bit of a late start on Saturday, the first official practice day, but I fished until nearly dark that night.  I was on the water by 7am launch time every morning and fished until 6-7pm every day of practice.  Determined to find enough quality fish for this tournament.  Kudos to my club member Dave Cindrich for borrowing me his boat, otherwise it would have been tough for me to get these long hours in for this tournament.

Practice was not easy, although I found tons of fish, I only had a handful of areas where I felt I could get consistent 2lb plus fish that a guy needs to make a Top 12 at the TOC.  I was pretty confident that 11-12lbs day would be all an angler needed to make a Top 12 and move on.

I had boat 75 of out of 80 on day 1, which did not bother me too much, but I was a little stunned when boat 74 went to the inside turn I wanted to start on.  Not phased too much, I went to my second choice about a 1/4 mile away.  I quickly put a solid keeper in the boat on a DT6 crankbait, while my partner caught 2 nice fish on a jig.  Constantly seeing fish on top of the flat, and they would not take my topwater offerings.  On a hunch I fired a custom painted square bill that I had tied on the night before.  I think i caught a keeper on my first cast, pretty cool feeling.  We hopped around to a few of my spots for the next couple hours, I eventually ground out a limit by 1pm after losing a couple keepers, but my 5th fish was bigger then the 2 that jumped off.

We hit some of my partner’s water in Trout, I did drop a nice 2lb fish on a drop shot from behind him and he got his 3rd fish.  I then hit a spot in Trout and made a decent little cull.  We ended the day in Cross Lake where i caught 3 keepers on a deep weedline on a jig, but no upgrade.  I ended up with a disappointing 9.30lbs mired in 58th place needing a 13lb bag on day 2 to move up to the 12 cut.

I fished with former club member Mark Elert on day 2, I had about 1lb more then him on day 1 so we took my boat.  Again I got an early keeper on the DT6, then put 2 nice fish in the boat on the square bill including a nice 3lb fish.  I finished my limit on a jig and Mark caught 2 on a jig on this first spot.  Mark and I traded spots the rest of the day, both catching nice 2lb fish.  In the end, a better day, but not good enough.

I caught 10.9lbs, for a 2 day total of 20.20lbs and a 29th place out of 160 finish.  Respectable, but anything outside of the Top 12 is a huge disappointment.  I lost a couple fish, that may have got me closer, but I really don’t think I ever got the bites I needed.  My 2.25lbs practice fish became 1.75lbs fish and I never found a place for kicker fish to make up for that drop off in practice.

I am hoping to fish the TBF MFBA State tournament at the end of September out of Wabasha, hopefully redemption can be found there.

Island Lake Reservoir Federation Nation weekend tourneys

This past weekend I had two club tournaments to wrap up the regular season with Gopher Bassmasters.  Thanks to Dave Cindrich for being unfortunate enough to hurt his back and to be an awesome guy and lend me his boat for the weekend.  We split the lake East & West for the weekend and the two tournaments.  I got up there around 1pm on Friday and practiced a bit on the East side.  I found a few fish and a few baits that produced some bites.

Saturday morning, I went directly to my best area and the boat right behind me had the same idea, good thing I did not daddle.  On my first cast with a Vixen topwater, I boated a keeper smallie.  I stuck with it for awhile with no more bites.  I then went to dragging plastics, and I was able to coax 3 bites including a 19.5″ beauty.

We hunted around the rest of the lake, I was able to get 3 more keepers on soft plastics.  Other then that, we caught some northerns, walleyes and short bass.  It ended up being a long grueling day.  In the end, I was one of two limits caught by 19 guys.  Mine was the largest limit, 10.6lbs with the big fish as well.

Sunday brought a new challenge, as I never spent anytime on that side.  I started running points in the morning with topwater.  On my 2nd spot, I had one hit, but couldn’t get any fish to commit on the topwater or jigs.  I kept moving and finally scored a 12.5″ smallie on the topwater.  I then slowed down and fished it with plastics.  I dumped a nice keeper next to the boat and then caught a short.

I stuck with soft plastics for the rest of the day, catching one here and one there.  Ended up catching 6 keepers total of 10.4lbs, this time there were 3 limits and mine was 2nd largest.

In total, 19 guys produced only 5 limits in 2 days.  I got 13 keeper bites in 2 days and that was the most by far.  Should be a challenging state tournament come next September.

Glad I caught some fish this weekend, as I was able to hold on to my AOY lead and finished 1st with a razor thin margin of 36lbs over 8 tournaments.
